Very clean. Large self-contained flat beside Southsea Common and the seafront. A breath of fresh air! Your own front door. Host on site and available if needed, but self checkin anytime you want. Near to the beach and the common makes it easy to vacation while still maintaining a certain degree of social distancing. This is a lovely place to stay :-)

INFORMATION DURING OUR COVID-19 SITUATION...

Hygiene:
Cleaning is with bleach spray (wipes for the floors) following cream cleanser. All the linens; towels, sheets, mattress protector, pillowcases etc are 60 degrees freshly laundered and ironed too. I also pay particular attention to all banisters, light-switches, door-handles, remote controls etc which I have cleaned with a bleach spray from the front door and up all the way through your flat. So you should find you are in as welcoming an environment as possible.

Parking:
As per the Portsmouth City Council website; the temporary suspension of parking restrictions has been lifted in Portsmouth as vehicle movement is increasing across the UK, following the gradual easing of lockdown restrictions. Resident parking zones are operational again and there is a charge for parking in Council car parks and on-street parking. I have 24 hour KC Zone visitor's scratchcard parking permits available for guests who wish to purchase them. They are in the flat as you enter, beside an honesty box. All profits from the box will be donated to the Pompey Street Space. (see https://greenpompey.org.uk/let-pompey-breathe/). We have a terrible problem in Portsmouth with car numbers and the congestion and pollution that brings. I hope you will support me in paying a little of that back. The permits are just under £3 each day cost price. £3 a day is therefore minimum expectation please. Many thanks in advance to all, and particularly to guests who contribute more than that. I am just starting this initiative up since covid-19 restrictions are being lifted and traffic is once again returning. The permits allow for nearby free street parking. Obviously not all roads are exempt for residents so watch the signs. "Avenue de Caen" for instance, and "Palmerston Road" are NOT exempt. The nearest parking is either on Auckland Road West itself (the first 3 hours are free so you can scratch the permit 3 hours ahead) or just around the corner in what is the pay & display herring-boned seafront spaces of Clarence Parade, or in the "Southsea Common car park" which is on the seaward side of the road opposite the Queen's Hotel. There are plenty of other roads the permit allows you to park in but these are the closest!

Social distancing:
For the benefit of all my guests and in accordance with Government guidelines I obviously practice social distancing, and therefore regret I cannot meet my guests at this time.

Breakfast:
I do still attempt to provide fresh milk, bread. eggs and cheese for all of my guests on arrival but as I am sure you will understand I cannot always guarantee the eggs at the moment. Rest assured I do try, and I am currently constructing a chicken coop in my backyard to be able to give all my guests fresh eggs all the time.

BBQ:
Now that Government restrictions are being relaxed I am at present pleased to be able to reintroduce the BBQ, and have a new barrel shaped one due for delivery which guests are welcome to use on the south-facing and private front garden lawn.

MY USUAL TEXT...
Come to this lovely place. Southsea is just fabulous. The heating is on. The door is open. All it needs now is you!

The flat is what we call "split level" here in England. It occupies it's very own floor of the house, with it's own front door yet has the interest of the rooms having slightly different levels. The house itself is very old - it was built in the mid 1840's at the start of the Victorian era which is why it has such features. As a matter of interest it was built as a "Gentleman's Town House" and was lived in throughout the Victorian era by Commanders and Captains of the Her Majesty's Royal Navy, with the top floor being the servant's quarters. The floor joists are in fact old teak ship's timbers! The houses on Auckland Road West are some of the very earliest in the area - back when Southsea common was waterlogged by the sea and our famous architect Thomas Owen was active in the area! The ladies coming to visit the house would have worn wire-framed dresses and taken a stroll down the "Lady's Mile". Inevitably the master of the house would have received some socially important visitors, and I like to think that our local doctor and famous author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the creator of Sherlock Holmes) may have been among them! Apart from a few modern comforts alot of the originality of the house still remains and I look on myself as a custodian just passing through. It gives me great pleasure now to be able to share such a special house with my airbnb guests from the UK and all over the world, plus an occasional modern day member of Her Majesty's Royal Navy!

In this very popular & spacious flat you will have your very own floor within the house! You will find everything you need from 100% cotton towels & snuggly dressing gowns to board games, books, CD's and DVD's. There is a smart tv in the lounge, and another one in the bedroom, so it's possible for the grown-ups to stay up and watch a bit of telly when the kids are in bed, or just have an early night snuggled up in bed!

I really have tried to make this a home from home so you really do enjoy your stay. You will find everything very clean. I am in the building, and my mum is just downstairs, so we are just a knock away if there is anything you need or want to know!

“Breakfast” is a comparatively good one: on arrival you will find tea, coffees, fresh semi-skimmed milk, muesli with an assortment of toppers, porridge, wholemeal bread, spread, jam, marmite, honey, free range eggs, & cheese. You will also find a very good selection of sauces and condiments for your pleasure and convenience.

We are very family-friendly. All children welcome, including babies that don't walk or crawl - but parent caution requested for toddlers please, because the flat has lots of nice things in it (like floor based smart tv's, vase of flowers, radiators etc) which, although super to have, do present some safety & damage concerns when it comes to the unsupervised toddler. The flat does however have 2 stairgates so the main stairwell can be blocked off, and the lounge/bathroom area can also be shut off from the kitchen. We do have books for tiny and young people, a super doll's house with furniture, a wooden pirate ship, a wooden car park, wooden "duplo" train track, young girl's push-along pram, play mat with overhead toys, baby bath and towels, toilet seat for little people, toilet step for the slightly older, small brightly coloured potty chair, and a good stable & clean high chair. The electric remote controlled log effect fire in the lounge is cold when just used for effect, but does have a fireguard when used for heat. We also have a tiny readybed with headboard specifically for the little person!

There is one double bed in the bedroom (with a fabulous memory foam topped new mattress), plus a choice of warm and comfortable inflatable "readybeds" (1 infant, 2 junior single, 2 adult single, 1 adult double). The double bedroom is large enough to accommodate two single readybeds, but they (or the double one in that case) could go in the lounge instead for separate sleeping if preferred.

I have a range of bikes (with helmets, lights and locks) for guests to use Free of Charge. I have a gent's town bike, a ladies town bike, larger child's mountain bike, girl's lower bar framed bike, a bmx, a junior child's, and a stabilised one for the very small child. I also have 3 scooters - one large, one small, and a "stunt" one.

Please don't miss out if you want to book a good number of days - with families in mind I deliberately open large chunks well in advance for school holidays etc, so if you find a block available don't be disappointed; grab it! No pets or smoking inside please (there are ashtrays outside on the garden tables).

Acceso para huéspedes
The garden is laid to a bordered lawn on one side, and rose garden on the other. There are tables with parasol and chairs, plus recliners if you'd prefer to sit back on the lawn. Feel free to pop out with you breakfast, or an evening glass of wine - on a sunny day or warm evening it really is a delightful place to sit and relax. Enjoy the charcoal BBQ with it's cast iron griddle and pizza oven! All the tools and gloves are provided, with kebab skewers too! Tell me please if you would like to use the BBQ and I will pop it on the lawn for you :-)

If you’re planning a romantic weekend getaway for two, family trip, business trip, or celebrating a special occasion, in our Great Waterfront City, then this is your ideal place! With the benefit of being located on a quiet road, yet also only being a few hundred metres away from so many great things. In literally that distance you will have passed the local library, numerous and varied restaurants/take-outs, many pubs (including a good Wetherspoons), a Waitrose, late opening Tesco Express and Sainsbury's etc etc. Within a few minutes walk you will find yourself at: Southsea Castle (with it's new child friendly fountains); the D-Day Museum; Blue Reef Aquarium; Pyramids Fun Pool (and Gym!); Southsea Common; Band-stand (with it's free Summertime weekend music); the Rock Garden; children’s shallow Splash Area; Tennis Courts; Palmerston Road Shopping Precinct (with it's Farmer's Markets / Food Fayres, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Iceland, New Look, Boots etc); Skate Park; Hovercraft to the Isle of Wight; and… the Beach! Walk further down the promenade and you will come to; South Parade Pier; Canoe Lake (there is a super play area next to it with children's fountains & really popular Zip-Wire!); the lovely Model Village; the Rose Garden; Crazy Golf; Putting Green; Bowling Green. Walk in the other direction and you will come to the: Funfair; Old Portsmouth (and the thrillingly narrow entrance to Portsmouth Harbour); Fish Market; Isle of Wight Car Ferry; Gunwharf Quays (with the amazing Spinnaker Tower); Historic Dockyard (with HMS Victory, Warrior; Mary Rose). Head North instead and we are close to Marmion Road with it's Deli's and collectable stores, then the King's Theatre and the many varied places along the artsy Albert Road. If you choose to eat out then you certainly will not need a taxi to get you back – we are in the heart of gastronomic heaven!

I adore Portsmouth; The Great Waterfront City! I was born here, so am proud to call myself a proper "Pompey" boy. I did make the mistake of moving away for a while, but I'm back home now and I live in a flat below the one in which you'll be staying, so will be on hand to help you out with anything at all you might need during your very welcome visit. I have only been hosting for a little while but during that time I have met some really super people. Some travel just a few miles, some from the other side of the globe, but I am honestly always so flattered each time anybody chooses me to book with here in Southsea. I love being an airbnb host. It really does mean a lot to me that you enjoy your stay in the house. I really am looking forward to meeting you, and helping in my small way some good memories to be made. I know that I am really lucky to have a garden in this small city island. I do enjoy working in it, and knowing that other people get pleasure from it. The wildlife that it brings in has made me appreciate how the small efforts we make do matter. We had wrens nest this year and have 5 tiny chicks. They dropped out of a hole in the cherry tree and bounced around the hydrangaers! We all make a real effort to cycle everywhere - we use the car as little as possible, haven't been in a car for many months and dare I say I am actually thinking of scrapping it. How our mindset can so suddenly change! Portsmouth is so flat and small that you don't really need a car anyway so I do understand it is easy for me here. I have in fact just bought a tandem! I home-brew beer & wine, love bicycles and live music, am a big fan of swimming (wish I could do it myself!), and I do not have a smart phone.

Durante tu estancia
You'll have the whole flat to yourselves - I'll leave you to your own devices; come and go as you like, but if you do need me I am in the building, and just a knock or phone-call away! I have made alot of suggestions of places to go in my airbnb "guidebook" - there is obviously plenty to do with many annual events on top, but I have tried to mention rainy day places to take children, and add anything my guests tell me they have enjoyed.
