This is the place to stay if you want a comfortable home-from-home with a warm and welcoming host. This apartment is a family holiday home - one of a number of apartments located in a series of large chalet houses on a spacious, landscaped, residential complex. The apartment has the cosy feel you would expect of a real home and has everything you could need for a comfortable stay, although I might add that it is an old-fashioned family home and some mod cons are not available (such as wifi). It is not a bland, characterless holiday rental but a well-loved home-from-home, which has obviously been a cherished weekend getaway for the owners for many years and retains its unique character with original 1970s decor and furnishing. The apartment offers many useful facilities for families - e.g. beach towels, mats etc to take down to the private beach, and for children there are many soft toys, board games and books, as well as painting and drawing equipment, which Dagmar (Nadia's mother) brought out to show our 6 year old daughter when we arrived. The apartment has one double bedroom, but there are several fold-out beds and mattresses (sofa bed) and the host is more than willing to find a solution to accommodate several additional guests if necessary. Dagmar very kindly provided a loaf of bread, butter and cheese in the fridge, and some bananas, in addition to basic store-cupboard items that were very useful, such as coffee capsules and dry ingredients.
The apartment is well-situated for enjoying the activities offered on and around Wolfgangsee, and is a short drive or walk from the centre of Sankt Wolfgang which has various shops including a small supermarket and Apotheke. There is a lovely private beach, and the Schafbergbahn is only a few minutes walk from the apartment's private carpark. You can also catch a lake cruise from opposite the Schafbergbahn station.
A lovely beach cafe (Strandcafe Arndt), next to the residents' beach, is perfect for a light lunch (salads, toasts, sausages) with a wonderful view across the lake. The Sachertorte (chocolate cake) was moist, sticky and delicious - the best we've had in Austria (MUCH better than from the original Hotel Sacher!)
Overall I would recommend this apartment for a couple or small family, although families with small babies should take their own travel cot (as we did) as there is not one provided. A children's table and chair was provided, which is suitable for babies who are already sitting unaided, but would be inappropriate for younger babies.
Thank you Dagmar and Nadia for contributing to a wonderful weekend at Wolfgangsee!
