El alojamiento
Our newly remodelled cottage has no neighbours, only birds chattering and the sound of the waves breaking on the shore. The stairs between our house and the cottage open up to a large deck and garden, looking out onto the flax and native tree filled Reserve. Fan tails fluttering around you with their “messages", Tui's playing tag, green eyed Wax Eyes, blue King Fishers and many more birds make their home here. Not to mention our ones, Chiquito, George, Tortilla and Yellow when she is here, found in their window trapezes or outside on the washing line or deck. The world famous Buster will bark at you for sure, he is a mini Jack Russell and is tiny, that is why he barks! to make sure you see him! Following him will be Rusty, the big dog that smiles. He rarely barks but could be known to hang out where he is being petted the most. We have a beautiful macrocarpa table with benches and lots of chairs, a perfect place to sunbathe (please use the sun block we supply, our sun is very strong!), enjoy a drink in the evening and socialise, BBQ for dinner, or just relax. Terry loves his gardening and it shows! There are garden beds all over the property where we grow a variety of veggies, flowers, herbs and fruit. Help yourself, we are happy to share what we grow with you. We do not use or purchase genetically modified plants or seeds.
We have a washing machine, if you give me your laundry I am happy to do it for you, small fee applies to cover the costs.
We provide ground salt and pepper, dried spices and olive oil for cooking: tea, plunger and instant coffee, raw sugar, muesli, milk, local eggs, butter, bread, seasonal fruit. Have breakfast on your private, sunny front deck while looking upon the rock garden, filled with exotic plants, fruit trees, grape and passion fruit vines, and many more treasures.
Books have been collected and friends have left some behind and taken others, help yourself and leave one if you have finished it. We have international adapters, and electric blanket on the bed, extra blankets in the house, candles and torches, beach towels and gear, fresh flowers that Terry designs complete the room. There is a heater if your really cold. If you are unable to find something you need, just ask, chances are we will have it. You will be treated like family
Your private bathroom has towels, a hair dryer, cotton buds and facial wipes, some razors, shower caps, first aid kit, lotions, shampoo/conditioner, body wash and soap and more. There is sun protectant, mozzie spray just outside the door. The new shower has body wash, soap, shampoo and conditioner.
We have WIFI to chat with family and friends, catch up on emails or just browse the net planning your adventures.
We have 2 kayaks with life jackets, beach accessories galore, snorkels, masks, fins, skim and boogie boards, beach chairs, shovels and buckets, skateboards and bikes, and more.
Beach towels are in the blue chest of drawers outside your room. Spades for Hot Water Beach, beach mats, sun lotion and insect spray (some beaches have "no see ems- little biting creatures that you can't see), a clothesline to hang wet clothes and towels, snorkels and fins, extra hats and even some jandals.

Acceso para huéspedes
Our guests are treated like family. Please enjoy the decks, gardens, help yourself to the fruit, veggies and herbs we are growing. You are free to use the BBQ on the deck or the one on the lower courtyard area.
Park in the first driveway at the 7 colour fence, that is for your car and easier to unload your things into the room.

Otros aspectos destacables
There are stairs going up to the cottage.
We take our dogs walking early in the morning and they get very excited, running down the stairs where your window is, they may wake you up.
Our son catches the school bus in the mornings when it is not the holidays, but he's not too noisy.
We are also next door to the Community Hall, there are wedding receptions held there usually March/April, we are not informed of them but they are usually shut down by 11:30, you can hear the band or DJ during their party.
Have breakfast on one of the sun filled decks. Take a short drive to Cathedral Cove/Hot Water Beach, walk to Shakespeare's Cliff/Lonely Bay or our beach, kayak up the Purangi Estuary, go fishing, play golf, visit the wineries, or just relax and watch the native bird life in the trees. Cooks Beach, Waikato, Nueva Zelanda

A short stroll up the street is Cooks Beach, where the sea is always calm, bright blue and ideal for swimming and skim boarding. The sun rises over the headland where the Purangi Estuary empties, or fills, into the sea. A magical place to start your day, peaceful and quiet. Cooks has some of NZ's oldest history - Capt James Cook sailed on the HMS Endeavour into Mercury Bay in 1769, anchoring just off The Purangi, the same area Kupe, the mythical Polynesian explorer had chosen when he first landed in New Zealand calling it Aotearoa. Kayak up the Purangi Estuary, its beautiful or at the other end of the beach is a little cave to paddle into then just around the corner is Lonely Bay, a locals favourite.
Lonely Bay is the place to collect shell fairy rings, string them up to hang outside your home to remember The Coromandel. In November, December and into January, Lonely Bay is lined with blooming red Pohutukawa trees, NZ native Christmas tree, it's a sight to behold! Above Lonely Bay is Shakespheres Cliff and lookout, a great place to view Mercury Bay.
Flaxmill Bay is the next beach, warmest water in the area for swimming. Across the street from Flaxmill is Eggsentric, have a cup of coffee and cake and grab some organic groceries, or a fun night out for dinner, sadly they are closed in the winter.
The next beach is Front Beach, beautiful homes are along the shoreline and when the tide is out, Mussel Rock is where we go and pick our kai fresh from the sea.
Lastly is Ferry Landing, the oldest stone wharf in Australasia, built in 1837. Ferry Landing is where you take a passenger only ride over to Whitianga, you will find banks, restaurants, shops, cinema…The ferry runs continuous in the Summer until late at night and is $6 return. We can easily look up the times if it is not summer, when they restrict their hours.
A 10 minute drive the other way takes you to Cathedral Cove in Hahei or Hot Water Beach, both must to do's. There is a park and ride for Cathedral Cove that runs in the summer only, it is located just as you are driving into Hahei. Park there and take the bus up to the beginning of the track. The car park up at the cove gets very full and you could wait for hours. From the car park the walk into the cove is around 45 minutes- lots of stairs at the end, so the walk out is about an hour- depending on how fit you are! The other option is to take the track that goes from the beach. Take the road going into Hahei to the end, as you are facing the sea, the beach track is to your left, just before the big Pohutukawa tree, you will see the stairs. This way will put on an extra 1/2 hour or so. Make sure you have sunscreen on, a hat and lots of water if it's super hot. There is nothing to purchase down there, you need to take it with you. Off the Cove track are two other bays, perfect for snorkeling- String Ray Bay and Gemstone Bay- check them out for sure.
There is a water taxi that operates from the beach, if they are running there will be a huge flag on the beach that you can see when you drive down there. There is also the kayak tours, they land at the cove for you to have a look around. Hahei Explorer operates from the Pa end of the beach. Cathedral Cove Dive shop runs diving classes. There are also lots of other boat tours that operate from Ferry Landing- Whitianga side mostly.
On the opposite end of Hahei beach is Te Pare Historic Reserve, made up of two Ngati Hei pa sites. A 15 minute walk up to the site, through an ancient pohutukawa grove, leads to the headland with views stretching for miles up and down the coast.
Hot Water Beach is just past Hahei. Dig your own spa pool during low tide. The hot springs are only accessible at low tide and only one area on the beach where the hot water is, that is by the rocks. From the road into Hot Water Beach, turn into the first car park you see-just as you are going up the hill. That is the surfers car park, park in there, it is not paid parking like the car park at the end of the road. Walk to the beach and the hot water area is to your right.
Please note the water can be extremely hot, so you need to be careful where you stand.
Best time to go is on a rainy day or sunrise and sunset, if possible there are a lot less people.
SURFING: Hot Water Beach a classic surf spot with a right hand point break and various beach breaks that pick up the best of the Pacific Swell.
SAFETY: Hot Water Beach has very strong currents, dangerous rips and holes which can make it unsafe. Please swim between the flags and make sure children, friends and family are supervised at all times.

Leaving the area back to Auckland, just before you get to Tairua, or if you are coming this way and have gone through Tairua, are two stunning Kauri trees standing side by side. These two Kauri trees, or the Twin Kauri's, are easily accessible and well worth the photo opportunity, you can see them from the road. There is a small walk from the trees that takes you to a smaller grove of kauri's and other natives.

Closer to Coromandel Town, but very well worth is New Chum Beach voted as one of the world's top 10 beaches. This protected beach has no buildings, no roads, no infrastructure or camping. Its a bit of a walk, 30-40 mins. From the north end of Whangapoua beach, cross the stream and walk along the rocky shoreline and over the headland through a spectacular nikau forest and huge Pohutukawas.

Terry and I have a great life here at the Cooks Beach, nice and relaxed the way we love it. We have just recently sold our ice cream/pizza place in Hahei, so we are having lots of fun painting, and changing things around! I have bought tools and am trying out making things. Our teenager, Nick, is very helpful and knowledgeable, but spotting him can be difficult, he is either at the beach in the summer, with friends gaming up in his room. We love our dogs and take them to the beach as much as possible. They both wake Terry up at 6am for their morning walk, you will hear them running down the stairs. Nick has a funny little cockatiel "Tortilla" you will hear him saying, "Tortilla's a pretty boooooy” and telling the dogs, "here kitty, kitty, kitty." I have a two year old Indian Ringneck parrot that I hand fed when very little and had not many feathers, her name was"Chiquita", but we have since discovered she is a he. Ringnecks can take up to 3 years before you can tell, so now it's "CHIQUITO". His girlfriend, a rescued ringneck that belongs to a friend of ours but hangs with us, called Yellow. And we are about to get a blue ringneck that is 10 years old, for sure a male, called George. They are not often caged so we ask that everyone be mindful when opening the front door. Chiquito has a very large vocabulary and is not shy, he is teaching Yellow to talk and hopefully will do the same with George. We are a very friendly and laid back family that doesn't allow much stress in our lives. We enjoy people’s company, meeting new people, sharing life stories, BBQS with family and friends and of course the beach. Terry loves his gardening and we have a great one! We are more than happy to share what we grow with our guests.
