One block from the Salton Sea, the artsy „Vargas Paradise“ apartment is the perfect spot to explore one of the coolest and most eccentric towns in the United States. Bombay Beach is a photographers and filmmakers dream. It has the feeling of a Mad Max movie set combined with the Americana vibe of the 1960s and 1970s. The perfect spot to write that next chapter of your new book or edit your documentary. A great base from which to explore sites such as Salvation Mountain, East Jesus and Slab City.

El alojamiento
Dear guests,
- If you are not familiar with our area: It gets pretty hot this time around. For your comfort, please check the weather conditions before booking.
- Until September 4th, our guests in Vargas have the whole property including the front terrace for themselves, as we closed our large front apartment due to the summer heat.

Due to Coronavirus.
- If you travel for business, are an essential worker or need to separate from roommates/family, but are not ill yourself, we are very happy to host you.
- Short term rentals for vacation in Imperial County are not permitted at the moment due to the pandemic/shelter in place order. Please have a look in our house rules, there is more information on reopening California Road Map.
- For the safety of our guests and our vulnerable community we change to a minimum stay for two nights.
- To protect you and our local cleaning staff, we block the night before your arrival, so there are at least 30 hours between guests (latest check-out is at 11 am, check-in at 5 pm).
- We clean with the CDC rules in mind.
____
The „Vargas Paradise“ apartment is a nod to the former owner of the house. He loved beautiful women and left a whole collection of the famous „Vargas Girls“ from the Playboy of sixties plus his own erotic paintings in his garage. Framed in gold they turn the small apartment at the back of the house into a kitschy art space.
Set on a quarter acre yard the bright orange house features a nice patio in the backyard for you. The porch at the front of the house belongs to our other apartment "Bombay Beach Authentic House".
- On-site parking for one car. More free parking space outside the fence.
- Comfy, new mattress
- The kitchenette is equipped with:
small microwave, electric water kettle, french press for coffee, Toaster, fridge, mini desk-top oven, one electric pan. Sorry, no stove. Normally there is also coffee, tea, sugar, oil, salt and pepper.

Acceso para huéspedes
-PLEASE NOTE: Vargas Paradise is at the back of the house. The entrance to Vargas Paradise is on the left side of the house.
-The bedroom has a full and a twin bed, original furniture with lots of storage space and a small cabinet.
-The kitchenette seats two on a small table.
- Larger groups of up to 8 people can combine Vargas with our large front apartment "Bombay Beach Authentic House".

Otros aspectos destacables
- Please be aware that Vargas Paradise is decorated with pictures depicting the female body and if you find the Vargas pictures offensive, it would be better to book our other apartment.
- There are two apartments in this house: "Bombay Beach Authentic House" in the front part and the attached "Vargas Paradise" in the back of the house.
- They are separate units with separate entrances and a connecting door, which is locked. As walls are thin however, you might hear your neighbors in the front.
- When there are guests in the front, please be kind to each other and respect the quiet time from 11 pm to 7 am. Thanks!
- Sorry, no WIFI in our house. There is a huge cell phone tower in Bombay Beach, we use our cell phones as hot spots.
- This is a desert environment and an old house. We do everything to keep it clean, but when the wind blows there is always some dust that enters the house. Unfortunately also crickets, ants, cockroaches, spiders and scorpions belong to the desert and they sometimes find a crack or open door where they can come into the house. This has nothing to do with cleaning, it happens rarely and we try our best to keep them out. It’s just part of Bombay Beach.
- Sometimes small cracks appear due to the many smaller earthquakes in the region. For all those who are not familiar with the region: Bombay Beach is located near the southern end of the San Andreas Fault. Earthquakes in the region must always be expected.
- We would recommend not to leave expensive stuff laying around on the terrace or leave the door open while you explore the town. But since a couple of years we photograph all over town, also in the middle of the night and never had any issues or felt threatened.
- There are a lot of dogs in town, not always locked in the neighbors properties. Normally they only bark when you walk on the streets. But be a bit careful, please.
- Please close the gate to our property always.
- Please note in summer times: There is a small air conditioning unit and a ceiling fan in the bedroom and one standing fan you can use for bathroom / kitchen. Since it is an old house, it mostly gets not cooler than 70-75 degrees in the bedroom and 75-80 in the kitchen on hot days.
Thanks.

Throughout town and on the beach the Bombay Beach ruins tell stories of the towns past as a prosperous fishing and partying mecca. And while on first view the place might look rundown it is bustling with life: From the live music and unplanned parties in the famous Ski Inn, to its growing eccentric art scene, an opera house, galleries and lots of public art installations on the beach and throughout town, Bombay Beach is a place to make new friends and get away from it all. A great base from which to explore sites such as Salvation Mountain, East Jesus and Slab City, take endless walks on the beach, experience the marvelous sunsets the Salton Sea is famous for and go birdwatching in one of Americas prime birding locations.

I am a visual storyteller and multimedia producer at the Bombay Flying Club, mainly working on my own long-term, in-depth, documentary photographic projects around the world. Currently I am working with my partner Frauke Huber on a set of multimedia documentaries about the global commons water, seed and land: White Gold investigates the social and environmental effects of global cotton production, while our new visual research project LandRush analyzes the impact of large-scale agro-investments on rural economies and land rights around the world. Both series are part of the collaborative art and research project World Of Matter. In 2010 I started Aggreys Dream, a project supporting a school in a slum in Mombasa, Kenya. Besides my photographic practice I am teaching photography, film and multimedia storytelling around the world.

I am in my house about 3-4 months a year. John is from Brawley and visits regularly.
I fall in love with Bombay Beach and its wonderful people while working on my ongoing documentary project about the Colorado River and the drying Salton Sea. So I bought and renovated one of the nicest houses here that stood empty for nearly a decade. Now my wife and I use it as a base for our ongoing documentary work, for editing films and writing.
