Maranda please allow me to set the record straight for all of our readers. Your evaluation of the area is completely without foundation and is clearly from a “glass half empty” view. I would invite you to read the other reviews that talk about what a GREAT location we have for this house. Being from out of town you could not know the dynamic of Birmingham. You simply could not have known the true splendor of the area so please allow me educate you just a bit.
Avondale is the fastest growing area in Birmingham and has been called the Brooklyn of Alabama by Thrillist Magazine. There were three articles in last week’s Birmingham’s Newspaper exclaiming how wonderful Avondale has become and we are a part of that. Serious real estate investors in Birmingham are buying up all of the Avondale properties. Investors are not in business to lose money and if Avondale was “terrible/dangerous” as you say, then home prices would not be soaring as they are.
There are homes that have been purchased on our street recently and are currently under renovation. We personally know most of the investors in this area and the houses, when renovated, are selling for $400K and higher. Those houses are not rundown – they are actually “rising up” and will soon be as adorable as our home. In fact, the owners have called us to ask about finishes and décor and we were happy to assist them. In some places, houses with boards on the windows are indeed rundown. In this neighborhood, it simply means that the new owners have ordered new modern windows and are waiting for the contractors to install them.
As in many urban areas, you can drive a mile in the wrong direction and be in a bad area. If you went “across the tracks” (as they say) and spoke to a gas station attendant in one of those places, I could understand (they have those areas in Tampa too – ever gone to Ybor City). However, I fail to see how the advice of a gas station attendant can be taken seriously in matters of Real Estate – I am sure he is still laughing from watching you panic and scurry away just because was having some fun at your expense. I would suggest you take the advice of a Real Estate Professional next time you want to inquire about a neighborhood – they might be considered a more reliable source.
