El lugar

Takashak is a rustic 3 bedroom beach house right on the beach. You can either rent the whole house or individual rooms and maybe share with others. See our other listings for details.

Family owned for 35 years, the house has been sympathetically improved over the years, whilst maintaining a simple beach house character. Light is provided by hurricane lamps.

You will be looked after by William and Nickson two local Giriama caretakers.

Takashak is very chilled. Get ready to slow down, read, switch your phone off, swim, snorkle, sun-bathe, eat fish straight from the sea, walk up the creek, walk along the beach at full moon, explore the ancient village of Takaungu.

William and Nickson can cook, do food preparation, wash the dishes, laundry and cleaning, bed-making etc.

The last 20 metres of the private drive is a steep 4 wheel drive only hill. 2 wheel drive vehicles can be left at the top of the hill 30 metres from the house.

On arrival you'll be offered fresh coconut juice off our own coconut trees to revitalise you after your journey. Karibu!

The house was highly recommended to me and now that I've been there I can easily see why. The location was secluded and beautiful, the house staff was incredibly friendly (and great cooks!), and the house itself was simple and rustic, with lots of character - a perfect match for the setting and type of vacation I was looking for. Really looking forward to the next time we can come out!

What a wonderful experience. Bruce is a superb host and having stayed at his other home, I always feel he wants to make sure his guests are cared for and has great communication throughout your stay.

Takashak was perfect: rustic, quiet, remote, and beautiful. William and Nickson took great care of us and we would certainly return. The beach os so empty of people and no one tries to sell you anything, which is hard to find along the Kenyan coastline.

My husband, his mother, his brother and I stayed at Takashack for four nights. Bruce and his wife communicate very fast online, which was much appreciated. The directions Bruce sent were very clear and made it easy to find the beach house on the small dirt roads. The house is beautiful and I love the bedrooms on the roof. With respect to the village of Takaungu, I wish I had worn a head scarf when we went to buy food. It is very Muslim and one of the shop keepers might have been less gruff with us had I worn long sleeves and a scarf. Though many people were very friendly and wanted to know where we were from and how long we would be staying. The beach was positively divine. Most days it was empty except for a few people. I recommend staying a few days to experience the difference in high and low tide both times the beach is amazing! We didn't realize we were there during the end of Ramadan and it seemed that the whole village came to the beach to celebrate that day and night. I did not feel comfortable on the beach that day, I was in a ankle length skirt and a tank top and got unfriendly looks and comments.

My family of 5 (three kids ages 11 to 16) really loved this place. The house is RIGHT ON THE BEACH. Honestly, sleeping upstairs is just like sleeping on the deck of a large sailboat ... without the seasickness! The view of the ocean is incredible. We really liked the hurricane lamps in the evening and we appreciated the use of Bruce's cooler (cold box) to keep some food items cold. We did not miss having electricity at all. The beach in front of the house is clean and lots of fun. The local people are friendly and respectful and we were treated very well. The tide pools are great for exploring and there are many spots to snorkel at for all skill levels. We spent the mornings building sand castles and swimming, and the afternoons playing in the surf at high tide. Nickson and William did a great job. We had Nickson cook us a meal every night. The fish curry was very good BUT ... our only regret was that we didn't ask for the ginger prawns until the last evening. We should have asked for it at least twice. As far as getting to a supermarket ... local transportation to the Tusky's at Kilifi was really easy and fairly cheap. Nickson and William were very helpful in explaining to us how to work the motorcycle/matatu/tuk tuk transportation scene. This was great since we don't live in Kenya and didn't know the system. The house has multiple great places to sit to read or play games or just listen to the head phones. The upper deck has a terrific view and a nice breeze (my sons particularly enjoyed the zip line off the top deck). The lower porch, though, is very comfortable and private and was the place our family hung out in the evenings to play games and talk. There is one more big thing I want to add that makes Bruce's beach house such a great place to be ... and that is Bruce himself. We never met him face-to-face but he was really helpful with arranging transportation for us to the house, was always quick to answer our questions, and all-in-all made our week at Takashak one of our best vacations ever. No doubt ... we will be back.
