The Walauwa Suite is a 2 bed-roomed private suite which includes its own dining, living, pantry and TV lounge.
Rock Villa is an enchanting, 170 year-old “Walauwa” (Heritage House) in a dream beach setting amid 2.5 acres of tropical garden, coconut palms towering overhead, frangipani scenting the air. Ideally situated on a beautiful, un-crowded stretch of coastline, tranquil enough to attract nesting turtles - a rarity along the over-populated Southern and Western coasts of Sri Lanka - and with only 4 deluxe rooms + a sumptuous 2-bedroom Suite, the convincing combination of intimate ambience, soothing pace and honest, unpretentious service at Rock Villa is the recipe for a totally relaxing Sri Lankan holiday experience.
Like the other neighbouring villas and low-rise hotels along this stretch of coastline, Rock Villa is set back from the sea, behind the 60 metre wide Green Belt of mangroves and natural coconut lands. One of Sri Lanka’s most stunning beaches lies directly beyond the bottom of the garden, over the (single-gauge) railway track and through the manicured mangroves. The surrounding area is also a haven for birdlife.
Rock Villa is a private getaway, perfect for sharing with friends and family. For the well-travelled, discerning guest, Rock Villa ticks several boxes: it is the antithesis of big Chain Hotels yet is a convincing blend of modern creature comforts, colonial craftsmanship and cosmopolitan style.

Esteemed Sri Lankan design star Nayantara “Taru” Fonseka is the consummate artist. The diversity of her artistic accomplishments over the past three decades stand testament to her uncommon talent. Since 2002, Taru i.e., her Interior design & Event management company, has elegantly decorated homes, hotels and businesses, and planned countless dazzling Society Weddings and stylish Product Launches.
Some of the highest accolades Taru has received, however, have been for her pioneering work in conceiving and managing the Taru Villas boutique hotels, and for proving the successful philosophy of small, highly individual, deluxe hotels to Sri Lanka’s emerging tourism industry. These efforts garnered Taru international praise from travel industry champions and guardians of style such as Conde-Nast UK, Robb Report, the LUXE guides and Wallpaper* magazines. Number 18, the Colombo restaurant she operated for a number of years, until 2009, was equally distinguished, being the very first restaurant in Sri Lanka to have attracted the honour of inclusion in Conde Nast Traveller’s Annual International Hot Tables in 2006.
Despite all the plaudits, Taru’s most treasured souvenirs of the original Taru Villas properties are the Guest Comments Books, filled with enthusiastic, happy feedback from former guests, some who remain friends. Since selling out of the hotel business several years ago, retaining interest only in Lake Lodge, her remodelled city B&B. Taru’s passion for hospitality has driven the opening of Rock Villa, her private beach house, to a discerning clientele looking for an authentic, intimate and relaxing holiday. She invites you to experience her soulful Sri Lankan beach escape.
