El lugar

The home was designed and built green by the owners in 2005, starting with a 160-year-old barn which was moved 1000 ft to the back corner of the 12-acre property. Emphasis was placed on reusing all parts of the barn in the home, which creates an outstanding old world charm atmosphere which has visitors frequently commenting, "Wow!...this place needs to be featured in a magazine!" Master bed (king)/bath is on the main level and the upstairs bedroom (queen) and a sitting room have 1.5 baths (1/2 bath in the bedroom and full bath with claw foot tub off twin bedroom) allowing ample room to relax in private for two couples. Cable, Apple TV in living, (DVD's player in master and an extensive VHS collection and player for upstairs guests). A private hot/cold shower on the deck is available for all guests. Firepit adds the warmth for star gazing and moon rise nights! There are board games, frisbee, ladder ball, corn-hole, bocce, badminton, and volleyball provided.

Our Stay At Higher Ground Exceeded All Expectations The pictures of Higher Ground don't do it complete justice. The beautifully repositioned and restored barn is sited at the the edge of a petite Vermont town of Middletown Springs - the 12-acres property is a short distance from the town center - which consists of a church, a general store, the historical society, a cemetery and a Cafe (more about that later). From the deck the views down the valley are amazing and star gazing is incredible. You can hear (but not see) children playing in a farm house across the meadow; and also hear the cows (again not see) come home at night. You can also hear the sounds of the church bells and a carillon at select times. The point is the place is blissfully private and quiet but there are sounds of small town life all around. The house is decorated to the nines - our style is pretty modern, and minimalistic. Cynthia's is not - it is done perfectly. Everywhere you turn there is something interesting to look at with a lot of whimsy there. The downstairs consists of a master bedroom, bath, living room dining area and kitchen. Everything is appointed beautifully and the chairs are all comfortable. The bedroom - is of special note - the king bed is like that on a ship (well except it is a lot larger) - that is you can't walk around it - it is wonderfully cozy and comfortable for two people and two standard poodles. The linens, towels, and all such things are high quality, comfortable and in very ample supply. The wrap around deck - has plenty of seating area - a dining space and most importantly, an outdoor shower! There are two wonderful rooms (with additional beds) upstairs in the old hay loft, each with a desk for writing. We stayed for just shy of three weeks, and as academics are wont to do, we got a fair bit of writing done. Somehow looking out the window down the valley and the mountains - made the writing easier. This is not a house for a large group (we were a couple with three standard poodles). It is also probably not good for families with small children - lots of stairs and many, many breakable things. The surrounding area is beautiful, there are lots of great farms and nearby little towns to visit, various hiking trails are nearby and motor touring is well worth it. Now the Cafe - Sissy's Kitchen - which sits on the lower edge of the property - you can walk around the pond, across the meadows, on perfectly mowed paths to Sissy's. There four days a week, you can pick up to your heart's content gourmet items to eat there or take home. We had two lunches and several dinners from there. Frozen or fresh dinners are available to take out. For a special treat - at least while we where...

We had a wonderful week in Cynthia and Pepper's cottage in Middletown Springs. It's a comfortable place, which stayed cool despite the hot weather. We spent many hours on the large deck, which offers gorgeous views into the valley. The property is well maintained, with a great swimming pond, walking paths, lots of birdlife, and berry bushes. Cynthia and Pepper are great hosts, who immediately made us feel welcome. Many thanks, we hope to return!

If you love somebody you would recommend this inspiring place for them and wish they could spend sometime there. We had absolutely fantastic time and we will surely plan on going back. The place is magical - the location is perfect for nature lovers like us. You can sit on the porch or at the kitchen table or even lie in bed and watch the colors of the sky, the leaves on he beautiful trees in the yard and at distance. You can take a walk at the grounds or just sit on a bench under the trees and meditate. We played outside with the variety of games supplied by the generous hosts while adoring the nature around us. House is beautifully decorated which adds to the charm and warmth. Hosts are available at any time and are open and friendly -we loved talking with them! We loved the fact that the owners care for the environment - we felt at home recycling every possible thing including the very convenient composing and the fact that detergents are eco friendly. Perfect!!!

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Pepper and Cynthia's house! The area is absolutely idyllic, quintessential rural New England, words cannot express the natural beauty of the space. The space is beautiful, warm and welcoming. The house is comfortable and relaxing with unique touches throughout. I am literally shaking writing this as I think of being surrounded by beautiful hills and valleys, replete with emerging foliage, hearing nothing but the wind rustling through the trees, sitting on the porch with a glass of wine and feeling completely relaxed. We spent most of the days exploring local hikes (Merck Forest was especially beautiful and accommodating) and the evenings making fires and cooking dinner at the house. We had access to the gorgeous kitchen with plenty of cooking supplies, and made use of the Apple TV to watch some Netflix before bed. Waking up to the stunning views in the morning made us wonder why we don't leave city life behind. Pepper was very easy to communicate with and very kind. We feel lucky to have been able to stay in his wonderful space, and offer our sincere thanks. If you're thinking about making a trip to Vermont and are considering staying here, just stop and book. It doesn't get much better than this!

This place is truly special. The grounds are ideal country/rural - trees, wildflowers, grass, pond, bordering on woods, and uphill enough for stunning views of rolling southern/eastern Vermont hills. The house is log-cabin-chic, super comfortable, views of the hills from all rooms inside. There is also a very well-appointed and stocked kitchen that has all the conveniences and more than you'd want. Easy to use grill on the huge terrace, great outdoor shower.... Such a wonderful place!!

We had a fabulous summer getaway at Higher Ground. This was our second booking, and the experience was as welcoming, comfortable, clean, and inspiring as our first time. We appreciate the remoteness--no cell phone service--coupled with internet when needed and access to TV coverage to watch the Olympics every night. We appreciated the well-stocked kitchen and the proximity of Sissy's and her gourmet food. Sissy's cookies are a must, and the take out prime rib dinner (yes, I said prime rib) a delicious luxury. We loved watching the weather develop across the valley and the clear moon rise, the ease of hanging on the deck and the nicely maintained walking trails. Pepper and Cynthia truly are hosts with the most--anticipating every need.

I am a jack of all trades/engineer/building science and my wife Cynthia is a designer, who as an idea person keeps the projects big and small coming... luckily we enjoy our time working together to make some of our dreams come true. Cynthia is no longer a traveler after being in one too many flying 'mishaps' and so now we look forward to meeting travelers from near and far by hosting with AirBnB. For those who enjoy getting to know us we are around in the caretaker's cottage but for those who wish to escape from a busy social life we make ourselves invisible. (We take our cues from you!)
