Getting from Cancun Airport to Akumal:
Akumal is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Cancun airport on Riviera Maya coast in the state of Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Mexico. It takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes by car or shuttle from the airport. Even though your destination is my Simple and Clean Studio, you need to tell the shuttle driver that you are going to La Joya in Half Moon Bay/Akumal. There are no addresses or street names and people know where to go by the name of the established condos.
By Shuttle Service
We have used USA Transfers (Cancun Airport Transfers) with excellent results. You go to the website below and make a reservation. For Hotel name, enter La Joya Condos, Half Moon Bay, Akumal.
(Website hidden by Airbnb)
They will pick you up at the airport and drive you to Akumal. My studio is across the street from La Joya Condo and is managed by the same people who manage La Joya. If you purchase round trip shuttle service, the shuttle will also pick you up at the studio and take you back to the airport on the specified date and time. The gas price has gone up in Mexico last year and as of February 2017 the shuttle round trip charge is around $170 plus you tip the driver in cash.
At the Cancun airport, there are many companies offering ground transportation at a fixed price per person. Prices change frequently. Signs indicate that you must purchase tickets for ground transportation at the stands inside the airport (after clearing customs). Sometimes (particularly off season) you might be able to negotiate a better rate outside on the curb.
There is only one road from the Cancun airport to Akumal, Hwy 307, the coastal highway. It is a well-constructed 4-lane divided highway from Cancún all the way to Tulum. When you get out of the airport area and come to the highway, go South (right turn) towards Chetumal. The major towns after the airport are: Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal (and then Tulum). From the Cancún airport, it takes about an hour and 15 minutes to Akumal. After passing Puerto Aventuras and their overpass bridge, in about 10 minutes look for a sign for Akumal and a pedestrian bridge over the highway. They have the unusual left turn from the highway into Akumal so please remember the following:
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: The Akumal resort is to the left (East) of the highway. As you near Akumal, stay on the left lane. As you drive under the Akumal pedestrian bridge and the overpass bridge, go another 50 to 100 yards on the left lane that will turn in to a U-turn lane into the on-coming traffic. Make a U turn and go back 50-100 yard and turn Right towards the entry way to Akumal.
Drive along the road, you will soon see Super Chomak supermarket on the right and in front of you, a narrow turtle "gate" entry to the resort of Akumal. Akumal means “place of turtles” in Maya. After you pass the narrow entry, you can only turn left (North). Continue on towards Half Moon Bay. There are many speed bumps called TOPES so drive slowly. You will pass La Buena Vida restaurant with dinosaur skeletons on the right. Drive for a few more minutes and look for La Joya Condominiums on the right side of the road. Park on the lot across the street from La Joya, and check in with La Joya reception. They are expecting you. If you arrive after 6 pm, when the office closes, they give La Joya security guard an instruction for the key. My building is across the street from La Joya, first/ground floor.
By Taxi and Bus
There are only shuttles and no taxis from Cancun Airport, but you can take a taxi to the airport from Akumal.
Unfortunately we don't have much experience arriving in Akumal on public bus from Cancun to Akumal so please do your own on-line research.
There is a 1st class bus, ADO to Playa del Carmen (half way to Akumal) from the airport. It seems to run once an hour or so. Once you arrive at the bus terminal in Playa del Carmen, you can take a taxi to Akumal-Half Moon Bay for a lot less than the shuttle. You can take a taxi to Tulum and from Tulum you can get ADO bus to a large city like Merida.
For your return trip to the airport, you can take a taxi from Akumal to the airport for about $80. Day before your departure, go to the taxi stall by the main entrance across from Super Chomak supermarket and make an arrangement with a taxi driver to pick you up at a certain time.
Taxi rates along the coast are fixed, but be sure to agree on the fee before you start. Remember to include a tip in cash for the driver. Taxis are available in all towns and most tourist destinations, so if you don’t plan on renting a car, it is possible to travel by taxi. You can even hire them for the day. The driver will wait for you and may even make some good recommendations.
On foot from highway bus stop in Akumal
When you get off the bus at Akumal, walk on the pedestrian bridge to cross the highway. It is about a 1/3 mile walk to the archway entrance of Akumal from the highway, and then another 1 mile to the studio. You can usually find taxis by the archway if you want to ride the last leg. Notice Super Chomak on the right. After passing under the arch, and if you can resist not taking a peek at the beautiful white sand beach and palm trees of Akumal Bay, take an immediate left and continue on the road for about a mile. After you pass Buena Vida restaurant on the right, in about 5 minutes, start looking for a condo called “La Joya” (pronounced La Hoya). Go to the manager’s office at La Joya for the key. My studio building is across the street from La Joya. There is no sign to our building. Our unit is managed by the same people who manage La Joya. The studio guests have the access to the beach through La Joya, but not to the swimming pool.
Please see "Getting around" section for the direction to the studio from Cancun airport. My studio building has no name. You have to go by La Joya Condo across the street. La Joya is located on the mid-section of the half-moon shaped bay.
