A spacious, comfortable house in a quiet neighborhood for those visiting or working in Pawhuska. Just half a mile from the Mercantile and the rest of downtown Pawhuska and a few blocks from the Osage Nation campus and Tribal Museum. New central air and heat and comfortable furnishings make this a great place to relax and rest.

El alojamiento
We have owned this home for over a decade and have worked slowly but surely to make it comfortable for our family of six when we get a chance to visit. The renovations we have done, including new carpet, HVAC, electric, kitchen appliances, and plumbing have been done to last. We've added new beds as we've added kids and done our best to make this our home away from home.

The large room upstairs (see photos) has a queen bed, twin bed, and a bathroom with a bathtub. Unlike the first floor, the upstairs is not heated or cooled centrally, but with window units for A/C and a manually-operated gas stove for heat. The space is clean, and dozens of guests have stayed up there comfortably, but it is on the rustic side compared to downstairs. Guests who stay more than one night OR have more than three guests can have access to the upstairs. Due to the extra expense involved with cleaning the upstairs, we ask groups of 1-3 who reserve the house for one night to pay an optional cleaning fee of $20 if they would like to have access to the upstairs.

Acceso para huéspedes
Guests who reserve for more than one night or have more than three in their group have full access to both the downstairs and upstairs. For groups of three or less who stay for one night, we charge an optional cleaning fee of $20 for those who want access to the upstairs (this charge covers the additional cost of cleaning that space). Those who don't need access to the upstairs are not charged this fee. Please contact the host to request access to the upstairs or if you have any questions about this.

Otros aspectos destacables
The upstairs is available, but has window air conditioners and a manually operated gas fireplace for heat. Anyone needing more beds than the three plus a sofabed downstairs should check with the host before booking to make sure the house is appropriate to their needs--the A/C window units work well, but are loud and the gas fireplace can be cumbersome to operate.

We listed our house on Airbnb because we had unused space available and thought that people visiting Pawhuska might appreciate having our house as an option among other places to stay. We are not like some other places in town that are essentially bed and breakfast properties whose owners use Airbnb as a booking service. Our focus is to make our house comfortable, keep it clean, and offer it at an attractive price to travelers looking for a place to stay. I remember looking over our house in August, 2017 and thinking that if I added a few doilies and knickknacks, I could list it on Airbnb. Then I realized that a full makeover we couldn’t afford would be required to turn our house into something that looked like the B&Bs I have stayed in around the world. So I decided to skip the doilies, get the house cleaned from top to bottom, and list it. That’s worked out for us and hundreds of guests so far. We love our house and it’s quirky comforts and hope our guests will, as well. Those seeking more of a showcase might want to reserve one of the other local properties.

Our house was built in 1925. Though we have updated many parts of it, the underlying structure remains an older house with some features that will eventually be updated, but require more that we can do for now. These features include:

—Concrete front steps that are part of the original construction. The wrought iron railing on the right side of the front steps as you face the house is in need of repair, and anyone reserving the house should avoid using that railing as it is loose.

—Some parts of our floor are uneven, and the durable carpet we installed when we moved in and that held up well for a decade is showing signs of wear and staining since the added challenge of 90 per cent Airbnb occupancy traffic starting in August, 2017. We are looking to get the carpet thoroughly and professionally cleaned soon in hopes of getting rid of some pesky food and mud stains, and eventually we will replace it. Until then, we can assure guests that we clean the carpet as well as we can with home carpet cleaning equipment.

—We do our best to keep the kitchen stocked with basics that guests need to cook and eat their own meals, including pots, pans, utensils, tableware, an array of gadgets, and salt and pepper. Between us and our guests, we also usually have basic spices and oddly-stocked ingredients that guests are welcome to use. We can’t keep track of everything, though, so sometimes we run out of the basics or lose crucial things to breakage. If a guest is staying more than one night, we’ll do our best to replace things that are missing. We also appreciate hearing from guests if we are running out of something important.

—Pawhuska tap water is safe to drink, but those who are accustomed to really good tap water might not find it as tasty as what they are accustomed to.

—The back porch is undergoing renovation and is not easy to use as of the moment. We suggest that guests limit their use of the back stairs.

—The exterior of the house was painted professionally in 2009, which was most likely the first good paint job the house had had for many, many years. That paint job is showing signs of wear and we are working toward getting the outside paint freshened up in 2021.

—Two upstairs rooms are accessible, but not really usable. One, on the front of the house, has been difficult to heat and cool with our current systems, so we have closed it off until we get a hotel style mini-split system installed on that floor. The other is a sun room that sits on top of the small downstairs bedroom, and we are in the midst of renovating it. Once the drywall is installed, floor renovated, and walls are painted, we will open it for guests to use.

Ubicación

Pawhuska, Oklahoma, Estados Unidos

The neighborhood is typically quiet. Houses on our street are older, and mostly well-kept-up (there are, at times, exceptions, which is a cause of concern among neighbors). In good weather, the walk from our house to downtown Pawhuska is easy except for a significant section that includes a fairly steep hill. Like our house, the Osage Nation campus, including the Osage Agency, Osage Tribal Museum. and Osage Veterans Memorial, is on the hill, so walking there does not require going up or down significant hills.

My wife and I are college professors, and we have a second home in Pawhuska so we can visit relatives and friends, and so we can participate in Osage cultural events like the summer dances. Given the close location of our Pawhuska house to the center of town and the Osage campus, we are making it available on Airbnb in the hope that others will enjoy staying there as much as we do. It's a place we love to visit and make ourselves at home, and we have enjoyed opening our home to guests over the years when they need a place to stay.
