A sunny flat in a renovated medieval house near the main square. At 330m asl, 50km from Florence, 10 from the A1 highway. Shops, outdoor market, clean river, woods, museum, concerts in a church rebuilt under Charlemagne, restaurants, tourist office.

El lugar

The flat gives a great experience of living in a Tuscan village, just 20m from the main square. The town itself is unique, above the humidity of the valley, but well below snow. In the summer it's dry and quite breezy towards dusk. There is ample free parking, and the driving time to trains in the valley is 15 minutes and to various cities 30 (Arezzo), 45 (Florence), 60 (Siena, Cortona), 90 (Orvieto, Pisa, Perugia) minutes. Our hills, in the province of Arezzo, are known as the Colline del Chianti Aretino - less famous, less touristed, the wine is DOCG Chianti.

Disponible para huéspedes

The private door is on the floor directly above mine. I can give you your keys when you ring my bell or I can meet you at your car and show you the way. Via Ricasoli has no traffic, so GPS doesn't include it, but there is free parking areas nearby on via Gruissan (misnamed Via Genova on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps), Via Roma and Piazza Garibaldi. You can, however, stop temporarily to unload at the bottom of via Ricasoli, and webcam pictures of Loro show this spot between Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, facing the clock tower, on your left. It will be on your right as you go down V. Emanuele towards the main piazza.

Atención a los huéspedes

Guests can ask me questions and I can usually help them with both little or big problems (phoning in Italian, contacting a doctor or pharmacist, recovering something left on a bus, explaining why speed limits aren't posted, etc.).

It's a good idea to close shutters when you're out, in case of rain; the village has recycling bins for plastic, metal, glass, paper, and organic garbage to be respected. Some pets might be allowed, but it's not an ideal set-up for them.

Before arriving, Barbara was incredibly helpful and informative about the surrounding area and suggestions on places to go. She was very thorough in communicating and always answered promptly. Once we arrived, we quickly realized we would not be able to stay due to having a one year old who is still gaining her grace and mobility on two legs. The apartment was clean and tidy; perfect for a traveler looking for a place to rest their head after exploring the gorgeous surrounding Chianti Classico region. Barbara was understanding and ever gracious.

Yes, the different levels for a toddler running as fast as Saige does are indeed dangerous, and I will warn people! The description does say "3rd floor apartment", which in a building from 1500 means 3 flights of stairs, and the photo of via Ricasoli shows the door half-way down (or up) the street. When you took the wi-fi code I asked if you wanted it 24/7 and you seemed undecided. Sorry if didn't understand. I've put it now on a socket that can stay on independently all the time. Usually I see people daily and can adjust to what they want. About lights, everyone should always be careful, but I guess I'm wary of Americans because I know my own relatives! Thanks for all your comments, and I hope you liked the village!

I do have 37 years of experience living here, first as a Canadian, now as an Italian, and the eagerness to share it. I should have given you some printed material about the Pieve di Gropina, instead of just recommending (URL HIDDEN) , which you can find when you have time. Another thing, if, as I hope, you come back to Loro, would be to visit the ufficio anagrafico in the municipal building, because they certainly have information about your family! Hope to see you here again in the future!

Anna & Amos

Barbara gave us a marvelous walking tour of Loro Ciuffenna so we knew the lanes, eateries, swimming holes, the ancient flour mill on the river and so much more; she is a fountain of knowledge having lived here since the 1980s. The old nucleus of this village is a perfect example of what you hope to find in italy, and the apartment equally so. Our most memorable stay on a long trip; highly recommended.

I'm a Canadian harpsichordist living in the medieval village center since 1981, right below my guest flat, and almost always on hand. I also direct a summer String Quartet Festival, now in its 21st season, held in Loro's Romanesque church, the Pieve di Gropina, a beautiful national monument (8th-12th century). The apartment is first of all for family and friends, but the "grape-vine" [ps this zone is Chianti delle Colline Aretine] has given me the pleasure of meeting people from afar and introducing them to Loro and the Valdarno [valley of the Arno river].
