Cottage by the Sea is a small but cosy 2 bedroom holiday home located in the peaceful coastal setting of Dooey, Lettermacaward in West Donegal. The cottage is within walking distance of the fabulous Dooey Strand – a 3km long sandy beach that is now a popular surfing destination. The cottage also lies along the route of the Wild Atlantic Way and is 15km from Dungloe – the capital of the Rosses.

El lugar

This no frills holiday cottage offers great value for a vacation in West Donegal. It has 2 living spaces – a small sitting room and a living room with dining area. The kitchen has a gas cooker, microwave and fridge freezer. The cottage shower room is designed to accommodate persons with mobility restrictions. There are lawns to the front and rear enclosed by a fence.

Dooey Strand is characterised by large sand dunes – a great playground for children of all ages. The beach is a consistent Green Coast Award winner for its cleanness. Dooey Strand is also a great location to learn surfing. Dooey faces out to the Atlantic Ocean and is perfect for long bracing walks.

The holiday cottage has water on 3 sides. To the south is Gweebarra Bay. To the west is the Atlantic Ocean and to the north is Trawenagh Bay. There are beautiful coastal drives – and walks – around the bays. Following the coastline of the Gweebarra will bring the visitor around to the seaside resorts of Narin & Portnoo which feature a superb Blue Flag Beach and a top class 18hole golf links course.

The cottage is a 15 minute scenic drive from Dungloe Town. Dungloe is a vibrant market town with a good selection of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants as well as the newly refurbished "Waterfront Hotel". The internationally renowned Mary From Dungloe festival takes place for a week each year, and concludes on the August Bank Holiday Monday. Dungloe is also the venue for the Daniel O’Donnell Visitor Centre.

We traveled from Coleraine, NI which took approximately 2hrs. The roads were good but we took a wrong turn near to our destination and had to phone Sheila. She gave us directions and was there waiting when we arrived with a warm welcome and much appreciated milk, bread, butter and biscuits! The house was great with everything in it that was needed, especially the fridge freezer as we had brought some food with us. It was a great base to explore along the Wild Atlantic Way, and close to lots of towns like Glenties, Donegal Town, Dungloe and Bunbeg. We had our dog, Bailey with us who enjoyed playing in the garden and making friends with Sheila's husbands cows in the adjoining fields. Bailey was very well behaved and slept in his own bed under the TV. We all loved the beautiful sandy surfing beach which was only about 15mins walk or a few mins by car and coming back in the evening to the turf/log burner (fuel supplied by Sheila) We had a brilliant, relaxing and peaceful week...just what we needed. Thank you Sheila.

Less than 10 minutes walk to one of Ireland's most beautiful beaches from which you can watch the sun set into the Atlantic (cloud cover permitting). If you can handle not having wifi or the most modern furnishings, you will enjoy your stay here. Although there are other houses nearby, you are quite isolated on a beautiful peninsula. Sheila is a considerate host. When the kettle stopped working, it was instantly replaced, even though we were content to heat water on the stove.
