Our 'cottage style' Rio Lobo Cabin is situated 4800 feet elevation in southwest New Mexico and has become one of our more popular vacation property rentals. Fully furnished in southwestern ranching style, this home is located on360 acre private acres snugged up against Bear Creek on the southwestern edge of the Gila National Forest just 35 miles northwest of Silver City, New Mexico. This home offers 950 sq feet of country living and is comfortably furnished with everything you need to start your next long or short term vacation adventure (including a washer/dryer for those packing light!). No annoying ambient light makes for excellent dark sky star gazing.

The Double E Ranch is filled with a variety of outdoor activities. Sleep in just a little longer or enjoy nature's wonders at your own pace. Numerous bird watching locations nearby and in the area often present an ever changing list of sightings. Wander along Bear Creek Canyon or hike to the top of the (more advanced) Double E Ranch Trail for stunning, expansive views of the Gila. Active adults will find endless miles of hiking on well mapped and well marked trails throughout Grant County and are suited to a variety of skill levels. Check your cabin information booklet for a few suggestions of places to start. The Double E Ranch is home to a significant variety of wildlife sighting opportunities and can include Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, deer, javalina, wild turkey, mountain lion or black bear. Or, just relax while rocking on your cabin deck!

To jump-start your vacation and for your convenience, the pantry is supplied with complimentary short term supply of items such as gourmet spices, condiments, spices, sugar, coffee creamer, tea, cooking oil and spray, pasta, rice, microwave popcorn, canned meat chunks, foil. A few miles from your cabin you'll find our local convenience store/gas station. They are stocked with fresh dairy products, eggs, ice cream, bread, canned fruits and vegetables, frozen meat, lunch meat, soda, snacks - open 7 days a week.

The cabin is a gently upgraded authentic vintage 1940's cowboy bunkhouse making it convenient for you to explore all that southwest New Mexico has to offer. This historic cabin is situated at the headquarters of the Double E Ranch. In this hidden valley just a few miles from the Village of Gila NM you can still experience the character and atmosphere of early southwestern New Mexico ranching life where 100 year old ''picket corrals" and original barn are still in use today.

A short 3 mile drive from your cabin you'll find services that include: medical clinic, library, post office, senior center, a variety of churches, gas station/mini-mart, local realtor. The largest town in the area is Silver City, 35 minutes drive away and includes grocery shopping, restaurants, night life, movie theaters, museums, antique stores, night life and more!

The Rio Lobo Cabin was the original bunkhouse used by those cowboys who lived and worked this 100 year old historic southwestern ranch from about 1910 to sometime around 1996 when its 30,000 acres became the Double E Ranch. At nearly 5,000 feet elevation, this lovingly restored, spacious 1-bedroom Rio Lobo Bunkhouse Cottage offers milder weather in every season, nearly 280+ days of New Mexico sunshine and clear, dark New Mexico skies made for star gazing. Take advantage of our much milder winters and continue enjoying your favorite outdoor passion.

The covered deck is perfect for savoring your first cup of coffee in the morning, reading a book while enjoying the afternoon breeze, or relaxing with a refreshing beverage after a day of exploring.

If you listen carefully, you may still hear the "ca-chink, ca-chink" of well-used spurs and boots that once walked these same hardwood floors. The Rio Lobo Bunkhouse Cottage offers lots of living space so it really lends itself to an extended vacation. The kitchen features full-sized appliances, including a dishwasher, and an adjacent dining area, so you can cook-in as much as you’d like, saving you the hassle and expense of dining out. The completely remodeled bathroom comes with large bathtub/shower, and a conveniently located private washer/dryer. Pack as light as you want – you won’t run out of clean clothes!

Decorated with vintage Western furnishings, cowboy art and framed Western romance paperbacks from 1920 through 1950s - including those of Louis L’Amour and Max Brand - you'll soak up the spirit of the Old West.

At New Mexico Cabin Rentals, you can participate in a wide-variety of free-flowing, set your own schedule activities, including hiking, birding, rock hounding, photography, stargazing, archaeology and maybe some mountain biking. Explore the hill sides along Bear Creek for the remnants of the Ancient Ones - the Mimbres Indians whose famous red/ black pottery shards can still be found, as well as arrow heads and or other hand made tools. The horseback riding is spectacular. If you’d like to bring your own horse, we’ve got self-care pens and a 300’ x 250’ enclosed arena.

Information on some of our best local attractions, art galleries, museums, restaurants, and annual events and activities such as Tour de Gila Bike Race, the Wild, Wild West Pro-Rodeo and Silver City Blues Festival are included in your cabin Information Booklet and can also be found on the ‘Area Attractions’ page of our website.

Acceso para huéspedes
Feel free to walk about on our many acres adjacent to nearly 15 square miles of public land accessible from the Double E Ranch Trail. At New Mexico Cabin Rentals, you can stroll nearly 2 miles along Bear Creek or be adventurous, do a little "off road" and create your own trails. Climb to the top of Turtle Rock and explore “Apache Corral.” The views are truly spectacular! Wander the ridges looking for the ancient remnants of the Mimbres Indians who lived along Bear Creek 1100 to 1300 years ago.
You are welcome to say 'hey' to the horses at the barn and corrals. All are friendly, some more than others. As a rule, we don't offer our horses food from our hands. If you'd like to offer them apples or carrots, better to drop the treat into their feed tub.

Gila NM, New Mexico Cabin Rentals at Double E Ranch is tucked along the southwestern edge of the 3 million acre Gila National Forest and the Gila Wilderness Region in southwestern New Mexico. With only a few cell phone towers in the entire county, cell phone coverage while driving can be spotty at times. Driving to the nearest shopping, restaurants, local tourist attractions or hiking destinations may 'feel' like a long way. Most NM State roads are well maintained but can be narrow, winding and have only 2 lanes. You might drive for miles without seeing another car (maybe a cow or two). Best appreciated by those seeking spectacular vistas, wide open expanses, cultural diversity, friendly folks, blue skies and sunshine, dark star filled night skies and no sounds but the breeze, the creek, the birds. We sincerely appreciate your visit and hope you find our corner of the world just as magical as we do!
From Albuquerque: We are approximately 250 miles (5.5 hours) from Albuquerque. From I-25 head south. At Socorro, exit onto Highway 60 south, driving through Socorro. Make sure your gas tank is topped off before leaving Socorro. The distances are great...the gas stations are few. Watch for the sign indicating Highway 60 makes a right turn. Continue through Magdalena, to Datil. Watch your speed limits! The road is very straight and some drivers are tempted to push the pedal down a bit. Be advised NM State Highway Patrol will be happy to "welcome" you. At Datil, turn left onto Highway 12 and continue to Reserve. In Reserve, Highway 12 makes a right turn. Follow Highway 12 about 7 more miles to Highway 180; turn left onto Highway 180 and drive south till you get to Cliff. At Cliff, turn left onto Highway 211. Drive past the school, bear to the right at the "Y", continuing across the Gila River. Once in Gila, bear to the left at the next "Y" onto Highway 153, go 1 short block to Hooker Loop. There will be a small trailer park on your right. Turn right onto Hooker Loop 3.2 miles. Watch for the large wooden Double E Ranch sign, bearing to the right onto Double E Ranch Road.
Drive to the bottom of Double E Ranch Road hill. Do NOT turn onto Casita Flats Road. This is PRIVATE PROPERTY and will take you in the wrong direction. Continue driving to the bottom of the hill. Once at the bottom of the hill, bear slightly to the right again, where you will see the green/yellow signs directing you to your cabin location

From Phoenix: Leaving the airport, head to Highway 60 East, toward Globe. In Globe, Highway 60 makes a left turn at the traffic light near Wal-Mart. You will continue driving straight ahead (east) because at this point Highway 70 begins. Drive through the San Carlos Apache Reservation and into Safford. This is the last opportunity to buy gasoline for 100 miles. Drive east out of Safford, on Highway 70 about 10 miles, and turn left onto Highway 191, which will take you toward Morenci/Clifton. At the 3-way stop, continue driving east without turning. Highway 191 becomes Highway 78 as you begin to climb into the mountains. Be careful! Sharp curves, drive slowly! Dropping down out of the mountains, through Mule Creek, you will intersect with Highway 180. Turn right onto 180 about 30 miles, through Buck Horn, to Cliff. In Cliff, turn left onto Highway 211. When you cross the Gila River, you will be in the Village of Gila. At the fork in Gila, bear to the left onto Highway 153 one block, turning right onto Hooker Loop (notice a very unattractive trailer “park”), drive 3.1 miles on Hooker Loop. Look for the large wooden ranch sign at Double E Ranch Road, bear to right at the Double E Ranch Sign.
Follow Double E Ranch Road to the bottom of the hill where signs will direct you to your cabin. Do NOT turn onto Casita Flats Road located midway down Double E Ranch Road. This is PRIVATE PROPERTY and will take you in the wrong direction.

Turn left onto Truck By-Pass Road driving 1 mile. It will intersect with Highway 180. Left turn onto Hwy 180. There will be a large billboard sign "GILA - Gateway to the Gila Wilderness" on your right. Just beyond this sign you will make a right turn onto NM Hwy 211. Drive 4 miles to Gila. Ubicación

Gila, Nuevo México, Estados Unidos

This part of Southwestern New Mexico encompasses some of the most remote, and pristine land in the U.S. The terrain ranges from rugged mountains and deep canyons to mesas and semi-desert. Our private 17 acres include access to Bear Creek, which feeds into the Gila River. Here, you'll find an extraordinary, privately protected riparian sanctuary, home to black hawks, falcons, hundreds of migratory and indigenous birds as well as spectacular views. Hikers will marvel at the climb to the top of "Turtle Rock" aka Apache Corral, from where you can see all the way to the Arizona border! We adjoin 6500 acres of New Mexico State land, which flows directly into the 3 million acre Gila National Forest and Gila Wilderness area.
Our vacation home rentals are affordable and all conveniently located 3.5 miles east of the quaint Village of Gila and a short 7-mile drive across the Gila River to the town of Cliff. We are 30 miles northwest of historic Silver City, once a booming mining town, and now a vibrant community promoting the arts, business, commerce, and tourism.
