Rustic but comfortable 2 bedroom garden (ground level) apartment unit in a very famous and gorgeous historic Savannah home.
The George Baldwin House was constructed in 1887. Designed by architect William Gibbons Preston. This was the first commission for Preston who later went on to design many of the most famous and impressive Savannah landmarks such as the Cotton Exchange. This home is largely original and rustic on the interior. This is for those who want to experience something far different from a polished hotel room during their historic Savannah vacation. The kitchen is stocked with basic utensils (plates, pots and pans, etc) as well as a refrigerator and stove and dishwasher. We do provide sheets and towels at this listing as well.
We do not have a sleeper sofa so this unit sleeps a max of 4 people. The bathroom is connected to one of the bedrooms so whoever sleeps in the 2nd bedroom has to walk through the first bedroom to use the bathroom.
The gardens and exterior of the home are other worldly, like stepping back in time. They are tended monthly so a bit wild but still beautiful. All outdoor space is shared with several other apartments in the mansion. There are several sitting areas. Each apartment on the historic estate has its own private entrance. Instead of a proper living room in this particular apartment you have a very spacious screened in porch with dining table and sofa that is private to this rental unit.

There are two separate bedrooms in this garden apartment unit, each with a Queen size bed. The bathroom is en suite with one of the bedrooms and the bedrooms have curtains as doors so this is great for a family but less privacy for 2 couples.
This castle-like home has a large garden/yard which is shared by the owner, a long term renter and 3 other vacation rentals. The owner of this home has lived in the main house for many years. He is elderly and has been very generous with many of the homeless around downtown Savannah. Many characters consider the owner their friend and may come into the yard to “work” for him or visit him.
We have had no actual safety concerns due to these “friends” but we do realize they could make guests uncomfortable which is not what we want. If anyone is on the grounds who seems to be problematic, behaving badly or simply making you uncomfortable you will have a number in the house info book to call for someone to come over and check on things. Everyone, regardless of whether they are a friend of the owner or a renter, has the same quiet hours rule at night.

There are many vacation rentals in Savannah that are fully renovated and as slick as a nice hotel, and I manage many of them myself; the restored and renovated homes cost much more than this apartment and anyone who is up for a really cool adventure without being a perfectionist will likely be quite happy here. This is a bargain priced unit. The low rate is based entirely on the fact it is largely un-modernized and has only the window ac units instead of central air. This is a fantastic opportunity for adventurous guests to experience a true historic architectural gem in Savannah at a budget rate but please do not expect the same level of restoration or remodeling here as you would find in more expensive listings nearby. It is very important to choose this one if both the price AND the setting appeal to you. I admired this home for over a decade before being invited to handle the guest reservations and I'm honored to be the owner's Airbnb host. I would never want any guest to be disappointed due to the difference between the incredible castle-like exterior and the humble interior of the lodging quarters. The furnishings are old, but our maid works hard to make it clean and comfortable and you'll have nice fresh linens. Just remember if the interior was as spectacular as the outside of the house this apartment rental would cost 2 to 3 times as much.
