We found Dutch Island to be a truly wonderful place! My family of 6 spent a blissful week there in mid-September, serenaded by loons, enjoying days of fishing, swimming, and kayaking capped by gorgeous sunsets enjoyed, cocktail in hand, from the game room porch. One whole day, and parts of many others, were spent out on the water in the pontoon boat included in the rental. South Branch Lake is incredibly peaceful, with minimal boat traffic (at least in early fall) and so little light pollution that we marveled at the reflection of the Milky Way in the glassy water one night. The rambling inn is rustic and charming, if slightly past its prime (old appliances, sloping floors, worn textiles) in a way that could either add to its appeal or detract from it, depending on your sensibilities. Likewise for the infrastructure; electricity on the island comes via a generator (not as loud as I expected, but to really appreciate the stillness of the place we sometimes turned it off and used lanterns instead) and water from the shower and faucets is pumped from the lake (but jugs of water are provided for drinking and cooking). For my family, this degree of amenity was perfectly acceptable, and lovely for an un-plugged getaway. We absolutely loved our time on Dutch Island, and would love to return for a future family vacation!

Joseph's place was awesome! We had so much fun. The housekeepers, Millard and Cheryl were some of the kindest people I have ever met. They even hosted us for a delicious breakfast one morning. The boat was perfect for exploring the lake and fishing.

This is the quiet and privacy I've been looking for in Maine for many years. You really couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting. It is the perfect mix of a rustic, yet refined camp. Aesthetically, it was perfect. We loved having our choice of porches for our morning coffee, and a quiet lake to go with it and the sound of the loons greeting you every day. There is tons of room and it is a very relaxing, perfect place to stay. I've always wanted to find a place like this -- it is quiet, beautiful, and harkens to days of old in a wonderfully elegant but not formal feel, it is a rustic camp that makes you feel as if you are getting away from modern life, but still so comfortable and lovely. The caretakers, Cheryl and Millard are just the most kind and welcoming couple. They put us immediately at ease and were always available for anything we needed. I really can't say enough about them. We plan to stay in touch! There was a constant breeze on the island while we were there, which was so lovely to feel and also keeps the biters to a bare minimum. I hope to come back next year! Just a couple of items to note - the water at the dock is quite shallow so you have to go out further to swim and there is no swim dock. No jumping from the dock directly into the water! Our daughter had a blast catching little sun fish directly from the dock. You can certainly ski and tube but there are many shallow areas so you must use caution - it isn't a super large lake. Which makes for nice warm water! Also, just to note, the ping pong table is two regular fold out tables pushed together. Certainly fine for fun at the lake, but a little quirky if that is important to you.
