To put this into context, I've been using AirBnB for years--dozens of times--and this was only the second time that I left an apartment before the planned stay was supposed to end. I also generally have given ratings to places I've stayed at 4 stars or higher.
Pros: Ben is a nice, friendly guy. The apartment is in a good location, and walking distance to many sights. The bedroom itself was reasonably spacious, with a big closet, and a mini-fridge (as the listing did not include access to the kitchen) and it was quiet.
Cons: Pretty much everything else. Check in was indicated as 5:00pm, which is already hours later than most AirBnB listings. Even so, the bed in my room wasn't made, and it took hours before the sheet finished in the dryer. Ben then instructed me to get the sheet from the dryer and make the bed myself. That was a first for me in a rental! When I noted that there was only a bottom sheet, Ben said that that's all that he usually provided. The comforter on the bed had not been washed, but I was expected to use that as my sole cover. On my request, Ben let me use a second bottom sheet he had that was clean, in lieu of a top sheet. BTW, the bed itself was small, and the mattress so thin or broken down that I could feel every slat holding it up. Not comfortable! The bedroom was also completely devoid of any charm or effort to make it attractive. Imagine renting a boy's dorm room without any decoration, and you get the idea.
To make matters worse, there was no overhead lighting--just a single small lamp on a bedside table, that didn't throw off enough light to permit easy reading. The curtains only covered the middle part of the windows, so the people in the building just opposite were able to see me if I was near either wall of the room.
The bathroom itself was adequate, but there were two long hairs from different people in the sink, and mold around the top of the tub. This despite a very heavy cleaning fee being charged.
The listing indicated that it included use of the washer/dryer, and a sitting room. Neither turned out to be the case. The only other room besides the bedroom that could have been a sitting room is the living room (pictured in the listing photos). But Ben told me that the living room and the washer/dryer were both off-limits to guests, and seemed surprised to hear that the listing description noted otherwise.
So, I left a day early, and would never go back or recommend this listing to anyone else. Ben and I had a long, frank discussion of these shortcomings the night that I did stay, and to his credit he listened well and seemed ready to consider making improvements. You can ask him yourself if he did so.
