A rustic, yet fully equipped, cozy hilltop fishing cabin overlooking the Margaree River. Margaree Forks is a great place to get away from it all and yet still be close to everything that western Cape Breton has to offer. Visitors who only want to be close to the Highlands Park might consider staying in Cheticamp.

El alojamiento
The Shackteau is my dream retirement fishing cabin. It is not a cookie cutter AirBnb designed by outsiders. Please consider it a work in progress. I stay there comfortably but there is always work to be completed. The driveway, veranda roof and deck have all been upgraded. Two sets of stairs have been newly constructed. There is a slight slant to the cabin floor that I have repaired as much as possible. You can see the road just down the hill, yet you are sufficiently removed from it. There are no neighbours in sight and you will have total privacy.
Note: The rental is for two people, and possibly a dog. The convertible couch is intended for the occasions when the two guests sleep separately.

Acceso para huéspedes
The cabin is entirely yours to enjoy during your stay. There is always some food in the fridge, a variety of teas, ground coffee, or if you prefer to grind your own beans they are available as well. Local treats such as Scottish oatcakes or tea biscuits are usually waiting for you to sample.

Otros aspectos destacables
Please follow the directions I provide. Google/GPS/Airbnb directions are not correct. You will arrive either from the wrong direction or you will arrive at my neighbor's farm. The cabin is not on McDaniel Lane. I recommend you arrive at Margaree Forks via Rt 19 from the rotary at Port Hastings. From the Forks it is less than one minute to the cabin.
The few arrival problems that have occurred in the past were due to ignoring my directions or an unwillingness to use their cell phone. Free wi-fi can be found at typical fast food outlets and the tourist office.
If you are not arriving at the cabin from the NS mainland you may need a different set of directions. Please let me know.
If you need the convertible couch made up for a member of your party please let me know so I can provide fresh linens.

This is a rural setting. My neighbour is a farmer. There are two seasonal cabins down the lane, but out of sight. The view of the river and the hills has an almost magical effect on your mood and well being. It is stunning. There is a Co-op grocery/liquor store a short drive away, and a Library/Visitor Centre with free wi-fi at the Forks. No matter where you stay in Cape Breton everything a visitor would like to do will require driving. I believe Margaree Forks is the best location for a visitor who wants to do it all.

I'm a recently retired teacher. My wife, Wilma, manages an office with a forestry non-profit, and is about to retire. Beginning November 2016 I began looking for destinations for my wife and I to get away from our cold Canadian winters. We have 2 children, our daughter lives in Brooklyn and works in an Art Gallery. Our son is studying in China. I love to travel. I lead school groups to Europe. Fly Fishing for Atlantic Salmon is a passion. Nova Scotia, Quebec, Newfoundland/Labrador, Iceland and Norway have been on my list of locations visited. Nature and photography is important-flowers, trees and birds. Our family lived in Paris for a year when the children were in school. We understand that quality of life is more important than standard of living. My profile picture was taken on a trip to China with my son and daughter.

The cabin is not a motel nor a business venture with round the clock staff or managed by an agency. Some Airbnbs are intended to be just an exchange of accommodations for money where the owner and guest remain more or less anonymous. This not my intention. Meeting my guests is both a pleasure and important to me. You may have done your homework before arriving but I'm still happy to share my experience and opinions about Cape Breton, if you are interested. I would also like to be flexible regarding check in and out, but it can cause a problem when guests check-in later than planned or guests neglect to communicate their arrival plans.
The solution is communication. I will message you the day before your arrival to get an idea of when you expect to arrive. You are free to request an early check in and go about touring the area after we meet.
Cell coverage in Margaree is still spotty, so I provide my wife's cell number. If you contact Wilma when you reach the Causeway she will be certain to notify me that you are on your way and when to expect you (normally a 1hr15min trip from the Causeway) I can only be reached via the wi-fi network at the cabin, whereas Wilma has her cell phone with her at all times.
