Looking for something off the beaten track? Through Duara you can experience real Zanzibarian village lifestyle in Jambiani on the East Coast. Duara is more than just accommodation: you stay with a local family, cook and eat with them and take part in the villagers' daily activities. Your stay benefits the host family and village directly, as part of the payment goes to a local community organisation. There are several host families who can usually each host two travellers.
Have you ever thought about where the poolboy or waitress from your hotel live? What are their homes like? In Jambiani you might just get the answer.
The Duara Travels experience includes three meals per day. You will be served local food, the same eaten by your host family. You can help them cook it and learn about Zanzibarian cuisine.
Note that there are several host families in the village. Once you make the booking, your English speaking Duara Contact, Aisha, will arrange one of the host families for you. If you are a group of three or more, you might be split into separate host families.
The main source of income in Jambiani is tourism so you won’t be the only foreigner around. However, living in the village instead of a hotel will give you a first-hand account on how this touristic coast functions from the inside out.
Jambiani is a village on the picturesque Southeast coast of Zanzibar island. The village panorama is unique with its white and grey houses framed with palm trees.
The atmosphere in this old Muslim village is something you won’t find on mainland Tanzania. Enjoy the energy and remember to respect the culture - tank top and mini shorts might not be the best idea (except on the beach).
