I loved staying in Kanako's house and I'd happily stay again in the future. It is spacious, clean, and comfortable, especially compared with other apartments in Tokyo. Great for one or two people. Her house is located in a quiet area, about a 15 minute walk from Shimokitazawa, one of my favorite parts of Tokyo. I loved living so close because it meant I could spend time digging into Shimokita's awesome bar and music scene well past last train :) It's a 7 minute walk from two major train lines, so you can get to Shinjuku and Shibuya in under 20 minutes. As listed, the house is traditional Japanese style, with tatami mats, futon, and sliding doors. It gets a lot of light in the mornings, and stays cool in the summer heat with an AC unit. As someone who works remotely, I also appreciated the well-functioning pocket wifi! Kanako is a great host, very responsive, and provides an adorable hand-drawn map of the area.

This is the place to stay if you are looking to experience authentic old Japanese living. I definitely recommend it for single travelers and perfect for a couple as well!

I had a great stay at Kanako's Traditional Japanese House. First of all, the house is really pretty exceptional and a decent sized place for Tokyo standards. It has incredible charm. It has tatami mats and wood and paper walls. The little mat you sleep on is surprisingly comfortable when paired with the tatami mats. The air conditioning works very well. I slept well there. I stayed there alone, so that is something to consider. Two people would be fine in here, but if you had more than that, it could get a little cozy. There are many places to sit here, which is extremely lacking in other accommodations around Tokyo. You get a couch, a small chair at the desk, a white chair with a back, and a nice little bean bag chair. The little desk was extremely helpful since I do a lot of work on my laptop. I found the Pocket WiFi very convenient, but there is a "500 MB limit" sticker on the WiFi. I had a 1GB file I needed to upload and although I was careful not to use too much, I generally did what I needed to do with very fast and reliable service and never ran into interruptions or extreme slowdowns. Perhaps that limit has increased. Since it's battery powered (and has a massive 7300mAh battery in it), you can carry it around with you and avoid the need for a sim card while using your smartphone. Kitchen area with a burner, fridge, and microwave is a bit small but sufficient. The separate rooms for the toilet and bath areas are nice--the toilet has a convenient bidet. The bath area is going to take some getting used to, but the handheld shower wand will work for basic needs. If you are 5'11" like me, or taller, you are probably not going to be able to actually take a bath in this thing. There is a little laundry room behind the bath area with a washer that worked well. If you don't speak Japanese or know kanji, go on YouTube and check out a few explanations or I'm sure Kanako can help you since she speaks English fairly well. I am very much a beginner to Japanese and a little (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Translate and YouTube videos got me up and running. It's in Hanegi, Setagaya which is about a 10-15 minute walk from Shindaita station, which is on the Keio line and will get you anywhere you want to go from there. Shibuya is a relatively easy train ride since the Keio line ends there. In one stop, you can get to Shimo-kitazawa or "Shimokita", which is quite a lively and exciting place. With all that being said, you will be staying in a residential area with a 7/11 about 8 blocks up the road. If you want to be right in the action of Tokyo, this isn't going to give you what you want. If you don't mind a little bit of walking...

Our stay in Kanakos little Ryokan was just nice. It fits perfect for us to spend some days in a quite Japanese Neighborhood in a well designed, small private space. Thank you so much for this, dear Kanako! Zuzana and Yves

Kanako was a great host, Quick answers and very helpful! The house where nice and traditional, perfect if you really wanna feel Japan :) Only thing was that it was quite loudy from outside. Think we just had a bad luck cause they seems to renovate the house next to us. But in general I can really recomend this place!

Try to use both Shin-Daita and Daitabashi stations, they can get you on different lines to different places. Also a reasonable and comfortable walking distance to Shimo-Kitazawa station which is really quite the place to be for food, music and shopping. We really enjoyed walking in the neighbourhood and finding unique little shops and looking at the way of life here. The house is as real as you can get, yet cuter. We really appreciate the nice things provided — pretty cups and plates, quality shampoo, conditioner and body bath, comfortable bedding... On our first day Hiro and Kanako walked us over for check-in and brought along a bunch of bananas. Those, along with tasty mini cup noodles and instant soup were lifesavers when we got really famished late that night! Small things like these show the owners' care for their guests. Kanako also texted us now and then to check if everything was OK, offering to help when we needed it. I'd wholeheartedly recommend the place to anyone who wants to live with the locals, like a local. I think it's perfect for experiencing slow living and relaxed travel.
