Quiet and comfortable back yard cottage is the perfect spot to explore the San Luis Valley. It is a studio unit with a kitchen and bedroom as one space. The small bathroom is a separate room. The house is 350 square feet. It is perfect for two, cozy for three and doable for four. It is in a neighborhood of older houses in the cute Colorado town of Monte Vista.
This space is comfortable, quiet, and sunny. It has a kitchen, dining area, and bedroom, with a small love seat and rocking chair for seating. The kitchen has a full refrigerator / freezer, electric range, espresso maker, coffee maker, microwave, and toaster., and fan. The kitchen is stocked with pots and pans as well as tableware. There's a Safeway grocery store 3 blocks away that is working hard to provide more organic and fresh foods. It's not Whole Foods, but it does the trick. Our bedding is always crisp and weather appropriate. In hot weather, we install a window air-conditioning unit. The weather here is generally not very hot in the summer, but on the hottest weeks of the summer, it can get stuffy in the house, and it can be so nice to come home to air conditioning. In the winter, the place is kept cozy by a gas heater, and plenty of cushy blankets. It gets bloody cold here in the winter, so come prepared! We sometimes work out of town, so it is possible that we won't be able to shovel all the snow for you in the winter, but we provide shovels and are happy to accommodate any special requests to the best of our ability.
There's a flat screen TV with a Roku so that you can stream Netflix or other television content with your login. And of course there's wifi.
There is a separate bathroom with a small shower, toilet, and sink. We provide shampoo and conditioner, as well as towels, and washcloths for make up removal. There are other toiletries provided if you forgot your toothbrush. We provide a hairdryer in case you forgot yours.
Please be aware that this is a small space by American Standards. However, it is comfortable and cozy by almost any standard. We lived in it with 2 adults (and a small business) for 2.5 years and then for another two years with a baby. This while renovating the 100 year old house on the main property.

Owners live in the main house on the property, and are happy to meet you or make ourselves scarce. The yard outside your unit is shared with a couple of cute girls, and an overpopulation of squirrels. When the weather is good, we often hang out in the back yard. The Phone Booth cottage is located in a small farming community in Southern Colorado. It is a very remote and rural place, full of gorgeous scenery and amazing people. You will realize this when you have to drive about 3 hours to get to the nearest Freeway on-ramp. It's a long drive, but totally worth it. The vistas of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains rise to the East, and the San Juans run along the Western edge. Both mountain ranges feature 14,000 foot peaks, and tons of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing at Wolf Creek, and swimming in thermal pools sprinkled throughout the region.
It takes a long time to get anywhere, and everywhere you go is a long way from everywhere else that you want to go. Trust me, the distances are pretty vast by most standards. We live in the largest alpine valley in the lower 48. It is 8,000 square miles, and is almost 8,000 feet above sea level.
Monte Vista itself is a typical Colorado small farming town. It is a mix of cultures, ages, and income levels. The San Luis Valley was originally settled by Native Americans, and then Hispanics who settled by the verdant rivers and grew built lush farms and ranches. There is are large (and growing ) Amish and Mennonite communities here. (And for this reason please be VERY careful on back roads... Buggies are a common sight in certain areas, and these fragile vehicles move very slowly! There are also immigrant communities, hippie communities, and communities of people passionate about the outdoors, and protecting it. We have huge amounts of public lands in the area, so there is almost endless territory to explore.
Places you might wish to check out if you have time include:
Penitente climbing area, which also has great bouldering, biking, camping, and hiking opportunities.
Wolf Creek Ski Area
Sand Dunes National Monument
Zapata Falls (A great place to go winter or summer when near the Sand Dunes)
Hiking various Fourteeners such as Blanca, Little Bear, Crestone Needle, and others.
Mountain biking trails: There are many within 10 - 15 minutes' drive from our house.
We hope you enjoy your stay here!
