Staying at the Outpost Club in Bed-Stuy was, at the risk of sounding hyperbolic, one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. A little background: I moved out to Brooklyn for an internship over the summer, and this was the first time I have ever stayed in a major city with the weight class of New York. I'm pretty young, and I haven't travelled too much to urban areas previous to this trip. I also had to travel to Hong Kong straight from New York, so I needed somewhere that was completely furnished. To sum all of this up: I showed up to Outpost with little in belongings and zero friends in one of the biggest cities in the world. After my stay, I left with some of the greatest friendships I've ever had. Over the course of the summer, the hosts engaged the guests repeatedly through awesome parties, events, and even just simple hangouts like watching Game of Thrones or listening to music. We went surfing, had cookouts, and repeatedly went out to the city with hosts or guests from other houses. Every day I came home to some of the kindest, friendliest people in the universe, and I had countless nights of staying up much too late stuck in deep conversation. From needing recommendations on places to go or a buddy to see a movie with, there was always someone at the house I felt like I could reach out to for nearly anything. For the house specifically, the amenities were fantastic and I could tell that the people running the organization genuinely cared about our experience. Even when something went wrong, the hosts were quick to address the issue. For example, the coffee pot happened to break once, and the hosts went so far as to order two separate replacements just to get the right one. This level of service is impressive, valuable, and left me feeling like I wasn't just another guest. That being said, you should know what you are getting yourself into. All of the guests I lived with respected personal space and privacy, but if you are a person that definitely can't deal with being around other people constantly in small spaces, you may not enjoy your stay here. It's New York, and although this space is honestly huge for the city (seriously - shoebox apartments are no joke) there isn't much in the way of privacy outside of staying in the single room. You have to learn (or re-learn) how to live with people from all over the world, but for those like myself, that's pretty much half the fun in the first place. Also, don't count on receiving any mail while you're here, as the mail service is spotty and difficult to navigate (at best). The neighborhood is vibrant, safe, wonderfully diverse, and loaded with great bars and restaurants. Explore the place if you have the time - I, unfortunately, found some of my favorite spots right at...
