The Hunker Bunker is on the road to Milford Sound, only a 5 minute drive from the Te Anau town centre - closest town to Milford and most walking tracks inFiordland National Park. At this rustic farm house you'll enjoy a private rural setting, amazing views of Lake Te Anau and Fiordland Mountains. Great for families and groups of up to 5. Good cell phone reception and wifi available.

El lugar

The Hunker Bunker is off the main grid. We have a limited solar powered lighting system and a small solar powered fridge. Although there is no TV, there is free Wi-Fi and a place to charge electronic devices.
Because this cottage is in the country, it is very quiet (apart from the sounds of farm animals) and at night it is very dark. This is brilliant for viewing the stars, but may make it difficult to sleep for city dwellers who are used to streetlights and traffic noise. Our solar lights can’t run throughout the night, so if you need a light on when you are sleeping, please use the torch/lanterns provided.
Although the Airbnb booking system allows for infants to be additional to total guest numbers, we are not permitted to take more than 5 guests in total due to local council rules.

Very nice place for exploring Te anau and Milford Sound. The accommodation is comfortable with all you need. The location is beautiful too in the middle of the field. And Dave and Joy do their best to offer you an enjoyable stay.

Great place for hunking, dreaming, relaxing, enjoying nature and warm hospitality at their best! Even at minus 7 the oben provided cozy warmth, for all supplies just 3 mins car drive. For sattle, sleep and the odd deer - just open the window. Splendid lakeview and alpine mountain Skyline right from the sofa. Ideal camp base for exploring. And lovely hosts!

The place is everything we hoped to be, and felt like home as soon as we walked in. Highly recommended.

A fantastic and unique home set in beautiful surroundings. It's a step back in time with careful use of the electricity (it's all solar powered) and using the hand held lanterns provided for night time navigation around the house and to the loo. We also used a generous amount of firewood in the wood burner to keep us warm in the evening and night time. Was cosy and lovely to have a home cooked meal with family and loved ones in the Hunker Bunker. We also enjoyed the star gazing, with minimal to no light and noise in the surrounds. Location is also top notch. With good access to Doubtful Sound cruise trips and also just a mere 1.75 hours to Milford Sound. Te Anau town is just 3 mins drive up the road for local supplies. It's simply a fantastic spot. Worth the visit!!!

This bach is beautiful, it takes you back to time when life was simpler but with the luxuries you may need eg Wifi and running hot water!! Well placed for a trip to Milford Sound and beautiful views of the lake. Would stay again if down that way. Great place.

What a fabulous place to stay in Te Anau! It has amazing views of the lake and mountains, and if you are lucky with the weather, the sunsets are beautiful. Joy met us at the cottage and gave us good instructions for the house quirks (being off grid these are many, but not problematic). The cottage was very clean and the owners provided some lovely touches, such as big fluffy towels, cookies, fresh roses on the dining table and our names chalked onto a welcome blackboard. The fire had been laid ready for us to light and plenty of wood was provided to last a couple of days. Despite being off grid you can recharge your devices and there is even WiFi available! The cottage is surrounded by countryside and you have privacy but it is not remote. There are a couple of houses down the hill in front of you but they can't see you. The owner's house is up the track, tucked behind some trees. The cottage has a good sized kitchen and bathroom and has lots of windows so lots of daylight comes. The fridge is gas powered, so tiny and without a freezer, though this didn't bother us as we were only there for two nights. There are three sofas in lounge with make it very comfortable and plenty of space for a family, though there is no grass play area as such. There is a small deck with a view of the mountains to watch the sunset and night stars from. Our tip is to arrive in daylight and with enough time to prepare your supper before sundown as there are solar powered lights but they are not particularly bright. They are fine to read by if you sit under them. Also, Bring a torch for your nighttime trip to the loo (indoors but through kitchen and down a corridor in the pitch black!). And bring slippers as the toilet floor is very cold. There are plenty of extra duvets and blankets as well as hot water bottles so you won't be cold at night. You can build yourself a fire first thing in the morning to take the chill out of the air, but being off grid you won't find any electric heaters. We had a wonderful time hunkering down in this little bunker. The only improvement we could think of is if the furniture could be rearranged so that you could eat your supper while watching the sunset. Highly recommended!
