Ana Julia and her family are amazing. Everyone in the family was so kind and accommodating, arranging everything from airport pickup to local contacts, city and cultural orientation, logistics and advice. They even invited us to join their rooftop new years eve celebration. The place itself was clean and comfortable, and just as described, with bedroom (1 queen and 1 single; a bit tight, but accommodating 3 people who like each other) sitting room and small kitchen. Ana Julia's apt is right next door and can be accessed directly, so you can just knock if you need anything, while still maintaining privacy and independence. The breakfasts (5 cuc / person) were delicious, with eggs, cheese toast, coffee, fresh fruit and juice. There are breakfast places nearby but this was a nice easy and filling way to start the day. The location was perfect, in the heart of old Havana; about 5 minutes amble to Plaza Villa and 5-10 mind walk to the Capitol or Plaza Armas. There are many cafes, restaurants, museums, and clubs in easy walking distance, including a cool private cafe/bar with delicious coffee, mixed drinks, and tapas practically next door; highly recommended. There is also a bike rental place a few blocks away called Roma which is a good idea for exploring the larger area, though various taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced. The area is in a long process of renovation, with beautifully restored historical buildings and sites interspersed by shabby disrepair. The rundown state of things in some areas - broken streets, poor lighting, stray dogs and cats, dust and garbage (more typical of Centro, though apparent in the side streets of Old havana) can be a bit disorienting at first, but these impressions are quickly overcome by the graciousness and accommodation of the Cuban people. The welcoming and positive attitude is a bit surprising, considering the tough economic times and isolation is mainly due to punitive American policies, but we were assured that Cubans understand and maintain a distinction between governments and people. Ana Julia's place is perfectly situated both in terms of location and humanity, to explore this amazing country and people. We are so grateful for the opportunity. Mucha gracias, Ana Julia, Irlenis, Miguel and Nestor, for a wonderful stay.
