Treat yourself to our spacious peaceful garden studio after a long day of work or sightseeing. The studio is the back of our historic home, the oldest standing structure in Berkeley! We are close to BART with easy access to SF and UC Berkeley. We are two blocks from Berkeley’s famous Fourth Street shopping area with unique boutiques, great restaurants, and coffee houses. We are also close to Rudramandir. The mini fridge, microwave, and coffee/tea station will make you feel right at home.
Our studio accommodates two adults comfortably. The main room is a spacious 23' x 12' and the bathroom is large. The entrance is private and windows look out onto our peaceful backyard garden. South-facing windows and high ceilings create an airy sunny vibe.
There is business class high speed wifi and cable TV. The queen bed is fitted with a new latex foam mattress, down comforter, and plenty of extra pillows and blankets. (Note: This is a great supportive mattress for bad backs.)
The halogen bedside lamps provide great light for reading or working in bed. A laptop desk faces the garden.
The kitchenette station is equipped with microwave, mini fridge, and dishes. It is appropriate for preparing a simple breakfast or heating up leftovers. It includes an electric kettle, Chemex coffee pot, assorted coffees, teas, cocoa, soup, and some condiments. We always provide some additional snacks, cold drinks, a little yogurt, milk for coffee, and Laurie's homemade granola.
The bathroom has a large immaculate claw foot bath tub with a shower head/sprayer. Towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a hair dryer, and iron are all available.
This is an old house but not a drafty cold old house. The morning sun streams into the bank of south-facing windows. Heat is controlled by a Nest thermostat modulated by motion sensors that keep the place at a comfortable temperature when you are in.
We hope you will enjoy the garden patio seating area during your stay. Smoking is fine in the backyard but not in the house.
There is plenty of free street parking nearby. This is one of the few residential areas in Berkeley where extended free parking is available.
This is a safe neighborhood! You can relax and enjoy walking to BART, strolling to Fourth Street, or walking to or from your car late in the evening.
Note: We appreciate cleanliness when we travel so we go the extra mile to provide you with a very clean place in which you can truly relax.

You are welcome to enjoy the backyard and backyard seating. It is OK to smoke while using this seating, though there is no smoking in the house.

I am a semi-retired chef and enjoy sharing restaurant recommendations. By the way, there are 18 restaurants within three blocks of us and 28 within an eight block radius.

We embrace diversity. People of all races, nationalities, religious affiliations, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, and disability (within the limits of our facilities) are most welcome here.
The kitchenette is setup to heat up leftovers or prepare a simple breakfast, not for full scale meal preparation. There is a microwave and fridge, but no stove or big kitchen sink for big meal prep or cleanup.
Enjoy our great microwave but don't use a hot plate, portable stove, or candles.
Don't show up or plan to get loaded or intoxicated while here. It's OK to consume alcoholic beverages here but intoxicated/loaded behavior of any kind will not be tolerated.
I am a retired chef and amateur clock maker. My wife, Laurie, is a partially retired IT professional and avid sailor and racer. We have both lived in the Bay Area since we were teenagers. We are very fortunate to have our children and their spouses here too.
We bought our 1854 historic home when we were too naive to understand how much work it would be to fully restore it. It took us twenty-two years to finally get there! Our sons began contributing to the remodel and preservation as young teenagers because we were entirely do-it-yourselfers right after we first bought it. Remodeling chores they had as teenagers morphed into successful adult businesses.
We love living in West Berkeley and particularly in our vibrant diverse neighborhood. We regularly walk to our favorite coffee places, restaurants, and shops. We are blessed with the most friendly and helpful neighbors one could ask for.
We sure hope you enjoy our home and great neighborhood!
