These photos don't even begin to capture the beauty of this home. Down a jacaranda-lined street, passed the security boom in a cozy cul-de-sac, double-doors open, revealing a lush, green paradise. Walking past the gate, onto the driveway and down the cobblestoned stairs, visitors can take in the stunning, well thought out home, with its glass doors and windows, and magnificent outdoor landscaping. The property is unquestionably impressive but somehow manages a subtly and a warmth, a friendliness even.
At the end of my (July winter) days in Pretoria, soaking up the peace and tranquility from one of the lounge chairs in front of the pool was a slice of heaven. And when my day ended a bit later, I indulged in the huge bathtub, complete with rose-scented bath salts, or rinsed the day away under the rain shower head, the heated bathroom flooring warming me up from the winter's night. If there was work to attend to, a large desk and a comfy office chair offered the space and support necessary to get things done before diving into the. most. comfortable. bed. ever! The sheets, the duvet, the blankets, the pillows perfectly curate a deep, wonderful night's sleep. A kettle, coffee, tea, milk and sugar, as well as a tin full of homemade rusks, were on hand for morning motivation. And ample storage (definitely enough for two guests) meant that everything could have a space and the large en suite room never felt cluttered.
But the real icing is undoubtedly the host. Rene is incredibly generous, offering assistance and making herself accessible but not intrusive. She has lived in the Western Cape and Gauteng and is a seasoned international traveler. Her experience, openness and curiosity make her a wonderful source of questions, information, suggestions, stories and perspectives.
I highly recommend this home for travelers looking for a well-priced place to relax, have fun and explore Pretoria, for business travelers looking for a 'home away from home' to recharge and unwind during a conference or work trip or for those looking for a writing retreat or a break from la vida loca.
