Modernist gem on tidal creek for swimming, or use kayaks & paddle-board to explore Casco Bay islands. Large outdoor decks or inside balcony view of eagles, hawks, blue herons, ducks, deer & turkeys. Private, quiet, trail hiking, 15 min to Freeport (LL Bean) or Portland's hip scene. Passive solar house w/ open beams, large sun room, basement w/pingpong & foosball; living room has large fire place. Cool art & furnishing. Near ocean beaches, mountain ski areas & midcoast Maine touring. Sleeps 6-8.
This contemporary 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath passive solar home with tidal frontage is conveniently located in Freeport, close to Rt 1 and Rt 295 for a quick commute to Portland or Brunswick, yet it is very private, quite, and beautifully located in the middle of the woods: It sits on 3.1 acres of undeveloped land and is surrounded by 88 acres of Maine State Forest.
Large central fire place, liquid propane is used to heat a central "wood stove," as well as two state-of-the-art gas heaters and gas water heater. Electric heat is backup system. A new generator insures against power outages.
It is perfect for families! Nick's boys (11 and 13) love to play in the snow in winter, enjoy the basement pingpong and foosball and play on the Wii console. In summer they enjoy the incredible outdoors which lends itself to all sorts of explorations, trail hikes, water sports etc.
The house is located close to Redding Creek and you can walk down a few simple wood steps through the reeds to the creek at high tide (roughly 3.5 hour window twice per day). You walk into the water through the reeds and jump in at their edge . Locally it's called "estuary swimming."
The water is a mix of fresh and salt water, warm on top and cold deeper. A great tonic and quite buoyant. It's usually warmer than the rest of Casco Bay. Use tide apps to find the window for swimming etc. The bird watching is amazing. Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, ducks, Cormorants, and Kingfishers abound. On the wood side are hawks, wild turkeys, woodpeckers and blue birds.... occasional deer.
During high tide you can use the kayak/paddle board and paddle out nearby islands and beach shores. You can kayak to sunny flat rocks to swim off or kayak roughly 15 minutes over open Casco Bay water to a sandy beach island suitable for toddler wading and adult swimming.
(You can find a video of some kayak/paddle-boarding on youtube (video taken right in front of house) - airbnb doesn't allow direct video links but type in xNIsS7magvc in the youtube search and the video pops up.)
It is a truly magical place!

Because of its open, two-storied design, the house is not suitable for very small children.
We're a couple living in New Orleans who are lucky to have this beautiful place in Maine, where Nick is originally from.
We love to be able to share it with you and have you explore and fall in love with rural Maine like Tanja did (originally from Germany, she came to love it!).
We come back here a few times a year ourselves, to escape New Orleans heat, to show Nick's boys a 'true' winter and cool summer, and to just wind down. We love to travel in general, but are just now discovering airbnb for ourselves.
In Maine, we have local family to take care of your needs! So also, of course, families are welcome to stay in this truly magical spot!
If you have any questions: just ask!
Cheers Tanja and Nick
