Nicely-finished basement apartment all yours
Fabulous location for easy access to the best of close-in SE Portland including Cartopia (food cart pod). Pioneer Courthouse Square (Portland's downtown living room) is only 1.9 miles across the Hawthorne Bridge, and the Convention Center is 1.7 miles to the northwest.
Walkable and bikeable neighborhood, and a short walk to Biketown rental bike stations. Both SE Salmon St. and SE 16th Ave. are Neighborhood Greenway streets that allow for safe biking.
We live upstairs, and you get the downstairs to yourselves. It’s like an entire apartment, but the stairs are also open to our space upstairs. The sliding glass door entryway is the only shared space. We don't go downstairs while guests are in residence. The bedroom has an inside chain lock for your comfort and to keep sleepwalkers in place. ☺
The nicely-finished basement has 1 large, semi-divided bedroom, full bathroom with a shower (no tub), kitchenette, eating area, and laundry. You can also use the clear-roofed deck to eat and hang out.
The bedroom has a front space with a double bed and a couch with a back that folds down to sleep one (or two small kids). The TV/DVD player is in this room along with a free-standing closet with hangers. There’s also a desk for your use with handy office supplies, bike maps, and other visitor information.
There are curtains in a doorway that divides the front bedroom space from the back space, where there is a twin bed. Easily room for 3 or 4 close friends or family and possibly 5 if some are kids. Cleaning supplies are stored on a high shelf, but the space is not totally child-proofed.
The kitchenette is good for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and reheating leftovers from your fabulous dinner out at one of the many local restaurants within walking distance. There’s a small refrigerator, microwave, electric kettle, and toaster and plenty of dishes for you to use. There’s no stovetop, large oven, or dishwasher (just a sink and a dishdrainer).
The washer and dryer are available for your use. There's also a clothesline on the covered deck if you prefer to use that instead of the dryer.
Have you ever wished you could keep up your green habits from home while you are traveling? We help you to recycle and compost. The hot water is solar pre-heated and the electricity is partly from photovoltaic panels on the roof and partly from Portland General Electric, through which we support other renewable energy sources. An efficient heat pump provides heat and air conditioning. We have a rainwater collection system that we use to water the garden too.
Disponible para huéspedes
Access is around the back of the house, up the deck stairs, and through the sliding glass door that connects directly to the stairs to the basement (also open to our upstairs kitchen). LED rope lights show the way. A lockbox makes it easy for you to check in and out, even if we are not home right then. Check in time is whenever you arrive in town, and checkout time is when you are ready to take off for the airport or to drive away. We want you to be able to enjoy your first and last days without being weighted down with your luggage.
Atención a los huéspedes
If we’re in the upstairs kitchen as you are coming and going, we are happy to say hi, hear how your visit is going, and offer some suggestions for fun things to do. I work full time, but my partner is retired, so he may be around more during the weekdays.

I'm trying to set a good example by getting the permit that is "required" by Airbnb and the city (but not enforced).

Please observe quiet time 10pm-7am, and we will do the same upstairs.
No smoking inside or out
I’m into cycling for transportation, electric vehicles, solar power, reduce/reuse/recycling principles, and singing (a cappella, pop/rock, folk, bluegrass). I came to Portland to go to Reed College, left for grad school in Aberdeen, Scotland and then San Diego, but couldn't wait to come back. I've enjoyed using Airbnb in Vina del Mar, Chile and Prague, Czech Republic where my daughters were studying abroad. My daughters are grown, and their cozy basement space is ready for guests.
