Experience off-grid living in Prince Edward County with all the creature comforts. Entirely off-grid and powered by solar and wind, this environmentally responsible home was meticulously designed by Canadian architect Martin Liefhebber.
This house has been featured in numerous publications and also in David Suzuki's Nature of Things "Build Green" episode in June 2007. A true nature lover's oasis.
Enjoy this private 2000 sq ft home on a 10-acre lot right on the Bay of Quinte.
Please do not leave food out as ants will easily come inside the cottage.
As stated in the amenities section, "Essentials" are not provided. Thus, when deciding what to bring, please remember to pack bed linens (inclusive of duvet cover, fitted sheet, pillow case, and flat sheet), towels (for body, hands, feet, and the beach), and kitchen towels. There is no need to pack pillows or duvets as those will be available. There are 3 queen beds and 2 single beds. Bedding of those sizes will be needed.
Feel free to use the condiments and spices in the cabinets but not the food or alcohol. If you use any substantial amount of products, kindly replace them before you leave.
Only toilet tissue in the toilets as we are on a septic system!
No outdoor fires and smoking outdoors only!
Do not drink the water from the outside tap as it is well water.
Please place all garbage in a bag in the beige bin in the carport at the end of your stay and ensure that the bin is locked to avoid animals. If there is more garbage than what can fit in the bin, please take it with you. The closest dump site is 15 min drive west on 35 County Road 14 (Sophiasburgh). They are open on Saturdays 8am-4pm. The 2nd closest dump site is 18 min drive at 37 Church St (Picton). The Picton location is open Wednesdays & Saturdays 8am-4pm. Both will cost $5/bag for garbage. For more information, please do a web search for "Prince Edward County Garbage Dump".
There is recycling pickup every other Tuesday - Just let your recyclables accumulate in the recycling bin near the carport entrance. Our neighbours can take the recycling down to the end of the driveway on Tuesdays if you don't mind.
The natural compost found by the carport can only take vegetables, fruits, coffee grind, leaves, and eggshells. It is not a city compost so please do not dispose meat, bones, oils, cheese, baked goods, compost bags, or bleached paper products in there. If you are not sure, safest is to treat it as garbage.
If you move outdoor furniture, kindly return it to its original location.
Be careful walking on the pathways as they are very uneven. There is poison ivy and Wild Parsnip on the property, so stay on the pathways to avoid them.
Please only adjust the temperature on the main Nest thermostat on the main floor. Please do not adjust thermostats in the other locations as we cannot shut down the system remotely if so. We have in-floor radiant heating and it takes time for the house to come up to temperature. In the cooler months of April/May, we find the house to be sufficient if set to 19 degrees. If more heat is required, please start a fire. We do not have air conditioning so even if you adjust down, nothing will happen.
When leaving, please:
1) Close all windows but keep drapes open
2) Turn off all lights and switches inclusive of the power bar switch for the TV behind the shelf
3) Ensure all fires are extinguished and close both flues and air intake door on masonry stove
4) Lock main, back, and front patio doors
5) Return kayak to carport
6) Ensure BBQ and propane line to BBQ are both shut off
7) Clear the refrigerator and freezer of any items you brought with you
8) Return key to lockbox
Mom to two boys who fell in love with this beautiful property on the Bay of Quinte in 2013. We decided on this place in hopes that our family can grow with an appreciation for nature. There's nothing quite like enjoying a glass of wine while taking in the beautiful County sunset.
We love taking our two boys traveling. As a family, we have been to Hawaii, Mexico, South Africa, San Francisco, New York City, and Ottawa. My husband and I have been to Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Hong Kong, Tokyo, London and many parts of United States and Canada.
