We are in the heart of Central Oregon, north of Bend and close to parks, great views, and dining. Our south facing butte is perfect for August 21st, 2017 solar eclipse viewing and mountain biking while you wait for the big event. This is a great opportunity to experience an alternative eco-friendly home and small farm—be prepared, you will hear roosters crowing in the wee hours of the morning. We have a studio, 2 rooms and 2 tent sites for rent with 4 night minimum.

El lugar

Kevin and Paula Kinzer are your hosts. Our south facing home is ideal for August 21st, 2017 solar eclipse viewing and mountain biking while you wait for the big event.
A private bedroom with a double bed and adjacent office with a high quality double futon. The rental rate for solar eclipse week 2017 between August 19-23rd is $175.00 nightly with a 3 night minimum and maximum party of 2 ($40.00 nightly for additional people). You will have shared entrance to the house and private access to your bedroom and lots of private space with a desk and reading nooks. Please note, our house is passive solar, so all the floors are concrete, slate or hard floors. You will potentially share a full bathroom. In the main house, you will have access to the kitchen, dining area and living room. The TV with cable is in the shared living room, but we are happy to give up the remote. There are desks available and lots of nooks inside and outside to settle down with a book or just chill out. We have a couple of places for stretching, yoga, and basic exercise but they are not private.
Although we built our home 21 years ago, there are several projects that we are still working on because of other priorities and lessons learned. We raise a lot of our own food and cook mostly from scratch, so we are often busy on the farm, processing or preserving foods. We love learning from our guests and are happy to share what we have learned about sustainability.

- We have poultry and roosters crow, sometimes very early.
- Our Earthship is an alternative home and there are still some projects that we are working on.
- If you prefer a fancy lifestyle more than a natural one, this may not be the right rental for you.
- Most kitchen appliances and serving ware are a available for use, but there are some restrictions. We need to be confident that you know how to use the appliances properly, such as the VitaMix, the solar oven, and Kitchen Aid Mixer.
The house is passive solar so all floors are concrete or slate, but there are a few rugs. If you have babies and toddlers and the hard floors are a concern, this might not be a good match. Our children grew up in this house and the hard floors were not a problem.

Paula is a very friendly engaging person. We felt very welcome in her home. It is like visiting your grandparents home w years of nic nacks, pictures hung in random places, boxes n books stacked high etc. In the guest bedroom you will see the tire walls that they left unfinished so you can see how the home was built which is why I booked their home. I was hoping to see their planter boxes filled with soil and fresh herbs, kale, lettuce, and spinach growing there, instead of just a few house plants in pots. They have this indoor cistern to store water and this rock wall above for the water to flow down and become an indoor waterfall. I would have loved to see this working. This home has a lot of potential to become a fantastic destination for those of us who are interested in alternative building styles. When staying at grandmas house we overlook all the clutter bc we are there to see grandma not her house. but in this case we paid a lot of money to see the house, so get the waterfall working, bring in some bags of soil, cut out the side of the bag and plant some greens, and hang a sheet over the closet, and remove all the random pictures, and the mirror/cork board from the bedroom walls so we can enjoy the uniqueness of your beautiful earthship.

This house is definitely an "earthship experience." In other words, it is about the opposite of a sterile hotel room. The bedroom is not large, but is clean and has storage space. The bed (a double?) is comfortable. It was a cold late summer night and the room was warm. The bathroom is off the kitchen, although you have it to yourself. The shower was great. The house is unusual. I think the owners built it out of found materials. Clearly they try to be environmentally friendly and are living the lifestyle that goes with that. Paula was friendly and a great host. She has two friendly dogs. Overall, this place can be interesting, educational and homey for some guests, but others may be put off by its quirks and nonconformity.

Paula is a wonderful hostess. You will feel truly welcome into her home. She offered to make breakfast each morning, beverages in the evening and use of her kitchen, patio etc. We left early two of the three mornings of our stay so did not take advantage of breakfast. However, the third morning of our stay we took her up on her offer of breakfast and it was delicious; fresh eggs (turkey!), sausage and freshly cut kale. This Airbnb is wonderful, but be sure to read the description because there are chickens crowing in the morning (which we enjoyed) and Paula's house is a true Earthship, . We enjoyed our stay immensely.

Paula and her husband made us feel right at home. I enjoyed our conversations and getting to know them for the brief time we had in Bend. The experience felt more like visiting with family than ordinary lodging. Our hosts were very attentive and respectful of our needs.

I looked forward to staying in a sustainable home and it was really quite a wonderful experience for me staying with Paula and her family. They really treated us like friends, spending time sharing their knowledge of the area, their food and their wonderful, warm space. Paula is an expert on essential oils and was very kind in sharing her knowledge with us. I enjoyed seeing all the animals, sitting on the deck and taking in the surroundings and especially loved the amazing clear nights we spent there. The stars were incredible. The bed was comfortable and the room I stayed in was cozy. I recommend earplugs if you like to sleep in the morning. The roosters are up early as roosters do. The place is unusual and beautiful if you enjoy kind people and being surrounded by plants.
