Even though I've lived in Puna on the Big Island for many years, coming up to North Kohala feels like being in a different world. This is such a peaceful spot - if you are looking to "get away from it all" this is your place. The cottage is delightfully cosy and has everything you need, there's even a sweet old cat for company (she sleeps outside). The bathroom is pleasantly large, as it was converted from a bedroom. City people may find the house a bit "buggy" - bring your mosquito lotion! But for those of us who love the country, this is heavenly. You are within a short drive of the end of the road at Pololu Valley lookout (stunning views) and also the art galleries and restaurants of Kapa'au and Hawi. Well worth stopping and wandering around these villages. Flumin' Kohala and also zip-lining are in Hawi - I plan on trying these out on my next visit!

Very nice host, welcoming, kindly and glad to share his knowledge... we regretted the house surroundings that were poorly maintained (junk cars...) and the lack of aeration...

Hapʻs place is comfortable and cozy with beautiful wood furnishings. The bathroom is extra spacious and the kitchen is stocked with all of the basic necessities. The beds are super comfortable and the bedroom stays naturally dark so itʻs easy to sleep in. :) There were three of us, 1 adult and 2 young girls and it slept us just fine. The girls were enrolled in a day camp, so it made the most economical sense for us to make all of our meals at home. I planned ahead and brought our own tupperware and stocked the fridge. For people who are used to having modern conveniences open at all times of day and especially for those who are travelling with young children, itʻs a good idea to have your own stock of food at home since most of the places in town close early. We also went to the public library to borrow books and dvds to keep the kids entertained in the evenings. We enjoyed the quiet and comfort of Hapʻs place. Hap and Mely are always close at hand to answer any questions and are super hosts! MAHALO NUI!

Cute, simple, clean and tidy old Hawaii Sugar Plantation cottage. Very quiet! Lots of outdoor activities to do in the Kahala area. Definitely a nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in a more hectic environment.

My family loved staying at Hap and Mely's place! We had a wonderful three nights there and were sad to leave. The space was comfortable, inviting and very peaceful. While close to town, we felt coming back to their place was quiet and restful after a day of adventure. Hap was full of great suggestions for hikes right from the property. Don't miss hiking down to the Pololu Valley and beyond! We will definitely return in the future. Mahalo, Hap and Mely!

We had a wonderful stay in this lovely cottage. It was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. Hap and Mely were excellent hosts - warm, welcoming and inviting. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting their beautiful property and meeting their animals. Mely gave us fresh fruit from her land and our son loved feeding the cat, dogs and miniature horses. What a peaceful and beautiful little part of the world!

I am a life long woodworker and craftsman/artist who "homesteaded" this old plantation managers estate, and relocated this cottage. My wife, Mely and I planted ourselves here 20 years ago and are living happily ever after...come enjoy our guest house and see our work..our motto,"if it ain't fun,run!...Aloha
