When my husband and I pulled in to the B&B after a day of exploring Islay to see a bearded, tartan-clad fellow dancing, we knew it was going to be a great stay. We were invited to use the community room and get to know everyone, though because we only stayed one night, we didn't get as much of a chance to do this as we would have liked. Maybe next time! Carole was a very welcoming host, and I highly recommend her. We had to take the 7am ferry from Port Askaig to Port Kennacraig the morning after our stay, and Carole was still willing to pack us a breakfast to take with us despite how early our commitment was--so kind of her! We appreciated how this B&B is in a quiet, scenic location that is central to and equidistant from a lot of attractions on Islay. We had no problem finding it and no problem navigating the island, thanks to Carole's willingness to answer questions and direct us.

Without much information on where to stay on the island we luckily threw a dart and hit the center with this one. Carole is an amazing host and was so helpful on our first trip to Islay. You feel like you are at home - good amount of room, cleaned daily, all the items you might need (even some baked treats left). The view out of our room was hard to leave after our 2 nights there. Located on one of the main roads (there aren't many) made getting around very easy. She was a wealth of knowledge and had much info in the common area to help new visitors. Her breakfasts alone are worth a stay. The options are almost endless and you won't go hungry. She suggested curry night at the Ballygrant Inn just up the road and we are glad we took her up on it. Will be a Airbnb of choice for any return visits to Islay.

Carole's place was the perfect "home base" for our four nights on the lovely island of Islay. It is a proper B&B with amazing breakfasts and clean, cozy rooms. We woke up each morning to amazing views of the Islay countryside and neighboring farms. One of the fun perks of staying with Carole on such a small island is all the locals seemed to know (and love) her. Her reputation as a great hostess (who makes great breakfasts) is known around the island. We had a car on our trip and really had fun driving around the island -- we appreciated that this B&B is very central and thus an easy drive to any part of the island. We felt like it really ensured that we saw more of the island (instead of staying in one spot). However, if we hadn't had a car it might have been a little out of the way.

Spectacular stay. Carole is warm, generous, and a fantastic cook. The house is inviting and cozy with incredible views, comfy beds and hot showers. The jams alone are worth the price, but Carole's breakfasts are exceptional. A lovely stay, and will stay again with her next time visiting Islay!

We wholeheartedly recommend staying at the Ayen Cottage. Checkin was a breeze. Carole was there to walk us through everything. She has comprehensive binders that make one's stay on Islay easy: Wifi passwords, distillery information, taxi phone numbers, restaurant menus, and the like. The room had some of the most comfortable beds I've had in Scotland, outside of hotels that cost multipliers more. The room also included an electric kettle for tea and coffee. Breakfasts were comprehensive and delicious. The previous evening, one selects whatever one wants the next morning. The selection is impressive: porridge, kippers, eggs, bacon, haggis, black pudding, fruit pudding, and on and on. Fruit juices, coffee, and tea are available, as are cereals and homemade jams. Perhaps most importantly, Carole and Barry, who run the cottage, are absolutely fantastic—amazingly friendly people who go out of their way to help their guests.

Our host and hostess met and greeted us as if we were family. After a long day's travel, they were able to relate to us in an appropriate and effective manner. As we warmed to the venue and our hosts, our questions began to flow. Each and every one was answered with accuracy and supported with written material. With Carole and Barry's knowledge we were able to effectively use our short time om the island. We will definitely be referring Carole's superb facility to anyone we know that might be headed to Islay.
