Acerca de este anuncio
Our lake cottage 12 miles from Portland's Old Port. You’ll love it for the same reasons we chose to live here-- the comfy cottage atmosphere, lake access, and a rural setting close to an urban center. If you opt for meals, we think you'll also love our food, prepared from garden veggies when in season. Our place is great for couples and solos, although we can accommodate 4 if you reserve both rooms. Please read all the way through to see if our space is right for you!
We have a lakefront lot with grassy spaces, vegetable and flower gardens, and a tiny boathouse. Our home is located just across a quiet, dead-end street in a mostly owner-occupied neighborhood. It started its life as a camp in the 1940s, complete with a fieldstone fireplace, and has been renovated into a year-round 3-bedroom. You'll have the option of choosing from either of our first-floor guest bedrooms during the confirmation of your reservation. Please see photos for details. You can also rent both bedrooms for a total of four guests at a time (ask us for the link to do this), but if you're staying in only one of the bedrooms, please be assured that we won't rent out the other to someone else until your stay is over!
Disponible para huéspedes
You'll have access to whichever bedroom/s you reserve, kitchen and dining facilities, and your own full bath. You're also welcome to use the patio, and of course the lake. We have a large flat screen in the library (adjacent to the bedroom with the twin beds), some DVDs, and a couple of network stations through our antenna, but there are no cable channels available.
Atención a los huéspedes
This is up to you and whatever our schedule permits during your stay. If Jan is available and the winds are right, you may even get to sail our 16' Hobie Cat!

-- I'm a chef, trained in a variety of circumstances. I learned to cook when my college friends and I started hosting TV nights at our respective apartments. We're all a tad competitive, and the baked ziti was soon a distant memory as we outdid each other in creativity and complexity. For five years, I provisioned local South Pacific and North Atlantic island produce to prepare six meals a day for up to 40 college students and crew aboard an educational tall ship. Now I provision from local Maine farmers and from my own garden to provide fresh, delicious food for our guests, upon request. Fees vary, but we provide options to suit your dietary needs for breakfast and dinner, and we can also supply take-away lunches for your kayaking or hiking adventures. To guarantee availability, please make arrangements for the meals you'd like to enjoy at The Cottage one week prior to arrival. But if you decide after arrival that you'd like to indulge after all, please don't hesitate to ask!
-- Our home is inspired by our travels, primarily to the South Pacific but also across the United States. From the literature on the bookshelves to the carvings and the marine samples, our place reflects who we are. If you want to talk other locales, great writing, or marine science, just ask. Otherwise we'll allow you to enjoy the tranquility of our lakeside home.
-- We will provide you with a brochure of our favorite spots in Portland, in case you'd like to venture into the city. We provide information on food choices for a variety of dietary needs and budgets, as well as tips on where to enjoy great music, art, and festivals throughout the summer.
-- If something isn't to your liking or as you expected, please give us the chance to correct it! Even if I'm not home, feel free to text, and I'll usually be able to get back to you right away. We consider you a guest and therefore want to do everything we can to meet and exceed your expectations.
-- Check-in time is 3pm to 8pm
-- Check-out time is 11am
-- NO DIVING off the dock! The water is about 4.5 feet at the end of the dock, and there are some large rocks. They're great for standing on, and not so great for diving. Just don't do it.
-- Depending on weather conditions, we allow fires in the fire pit, but we don't allow unattended fires. Please make sure your fire is dead out before heading out.
-- Please treat our home and our neighbors with respect, and demonstrate common courtesy. Please remember that you are renting space in our home, not a room in a hotel. We love to interact when it's amenable to both parties, but we're also professionals who may have obligations outside of the home. If you've booked meals, I'll obviously be around to prepare and serve them, but if you haven't, you're welcome to use the refrigerator and stove as long as you clean up afterward.

I'm a writer, chef, U.S. Coast Guard licensed sailor, and former college professor. Jan is a Finnish import, an oceanographer, and a much more skilled sailor, despite the absence of a license. We both love to entertain and are excited to open our home to guests. Before we met, I was a solo traveler. People surprised me with their generosity and kindness, and now I get the opportunity to pay it forward. You can check out my thoughts on paying it forward if you search the web for "one small act of generosity from a stranger forever changed my life."
