Red Mule Lodge is an amazing place to stay with lovely hosts and some dogs to guide you around the trails. The house was clean and well stocked with pot/pans for cooking. The large sreened in porch has expansive views, candles and a sauna! I'm definitely coming back again!

Exactly as described. Location is short drive to Sparta or Cookeville but close to all the great hiking destinations near as well. Relaxing. Enjoyed a great day of local activity and a restful evening sitting on the screened porch just watching the stars. Dan even hosted a nice watermelon happy hour at the main house in the late afternoon. Would highly recommend.

I took the dog for a writing treat at Dan and Jo's farm and had an absolutely wonderful time. The porch is private, large, and screened. I enjoyed sipping bourbon and rocking in the chairs in the evening to wind down. There are a few trails on the property and even more trails at dog-friendly Burgess Falls State Park. It was certainly easy to jump online and to write at the lodge. But it was also easy to drive the Poet's in Cookville if I needed a change of scenery to keep writing. I would definitely come back!

The cabin is exactly as the photos show, and not a square foot more. But that was fine by us, it had everything we needed. We took advantage of the board game, face wash, bottle opener, incense & candles -- those little things you can't get at a hotel. Cookeville was a 15 minute or less drive away and had many great places to eat. (Try Father Tom's Pub!) The kitchen was stocked with dishes & spices though so we could have cooked, there's also a microwave & dining table. The cabin however is out in the boonies. At night you could see the stars or turn on the little Christmas lights on the porch. So cute! My husband and I spent time on the recliners, reading books and looking out on the field, made all the more cozy by the cooling ceiling fan & window a/c. At dusk he'd enjoy a smoke on the large porch. It's worth noting the porch isn't 100% private since it's close to the horse access point and another cabin. I was delighted that the horses were literally 6' from our porch (thru the screen) when we arrived. Dan even identified them by name. Parking is right next to the cabin so it was easy to get in and out. Speaking of which, Dan's place is pretty close to highway 111 so getting around to all the AMAZING Tennessee State Parks was so easy. I wouldn't necessarily recommend trying to find the place in the dark, but it's just a couple turns off 111. (Do not use Mapquest -- it was so confusing. GPS was on the money). The bedroom has a bunch of hooks on the walls to make up for the small space. The bed was comfy and extra linens were appreciated. There's also a pocket door if you want privacy. The bathroom is a cute little gem. I loved the glossy white corrugated walls and the antique lamp sconce. They even had q-tips. The shower was tiny as was the water heater --- luckily Dan warned us about that. Our favorite part was the walking trail. The dogs really do run/walk with you and help you find the trail one it gets more wooded (thank you Rex & Rosie). I particularly enjoyed the quirky art pieces that are located at stopping points along the trail. You can see the influence of Dan's artist wife with the little whimsical touches (broken-pot-rock-garden is amazing idea). We never met her but Dan was there all weekend if we needed him. You could usually find him on a porch, playing music. (The cabin even has a guitar stand for your use FYI.) He was super easy to work with. We were very pleased with the entire experience.

We stopped here for one night on our way through Tennessee. Dan was very easy to communicate with and made our first Airbnb experience easy and simple. He was there to greet us upon our arrival and got us settled in fast. The Red Mule lodge was just as described and the greeting by the horses and dogs made for a great country night! We enjoyed a quick hike through the property and then settled in on the screen porch and watched the firework show from passing storms. In the morning we visited Burgess Falls SP (extremely convenient) and enjoyed our hike even though it was quite hot and humid! I highly reccomend a stay with Dan.

Staying here is a bucket list item you didn't know you had. Dan and Jo embody everything you hope humanity can become. Their home and property are rare gems of the earth - and their hospitality is ancient in its wisdom. Warm - inviting - respectful - and filled with surprising gifts (like cold watermelon on a hot summer day) Their dogs have a thing or two to teach about friendship as well. Could go on and on.. Come on down to the White Mule Lodge!

My girlfriend and I had such a wonderful time at Red Mule Lodge on our way back to Missouri from Florida. We needed a "vacation from our vacation", and this was exactly what we were looking for. Beautiful small farm with quaint dwellings, entertaining and well-maintained walking trails, and beautiful scenery. Dave and Jo were especially friendly and welcoming. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

I play bluegrass music. I raise English Shepherd dogs and ride Tennessee Walking horses. I live on the old Holman Home Place, handed down to me to cherish. Return to the land, relax and revisit the values and rhythms of farm life. We will treat you so many ways you are bound to like one of them!
