El lugar

The kitchen has all the utensils you might need to prepare your own meals. If you can’t find something you need, I’m happy to lend anything from my kitchen. Please wash the dishes and leave the kitchen as you found it.

The tap water in the casita comes directly from my deep well. It is pure and fabulous. Guests will find a pitcher of cold water in the refrigerator and may snip a sprig of mint just outside the door much of the year to enjoy with it.

There are two friendly dogs and three cats on the property. They may come around to see you, but please, don’t let them into the casita. Some guests may be allergic.

Please hang your wet towels on the hooks in the bathroom.

Disponible para huéspedes

Guests are welcome to explore the mesa directly behind my home. My dogs may gleefully accompany you on your walk, but please let me know if you do not want them to go along. Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen and closed-toe shoes for safe hiking. And, be sure to carry enough water!

The large east-facing windows have solar shades that are very effective at keeping the casita cool in summer when pulled down. By leaving them raised during the day in winter, the casita will warm significantly from solar gain. For your comfort and to conserve energy, adjust according to the season.
The thermostat on the wall controls under-floor radiant heat. It is set at the most efficient temperature to keep the casita warm but may need a boost on cold days. For that there is an infrared heater by the window. There is a toggle switch on the back to turn it on and a remote to control the temperature. There is also a small heater in the bathroom for a boost when needed. Please be sure to turn both heaters off when going out.
The wifi router is located in the corner behind the bed. The switch closest to the window above the headboard controls it. This should be left in the on position. If you need to reboot, turn the switch off and then back on after a minute. The network name and password are posted on the wall by the door.

We spent two nights with Mary while attending the annual Dixon Open Studio art event in November. The casita is a roomy studio with a large window that looks out over the valley and provides morning sunshine. The kitchen area is charming and stocked not only with plenty of cooking equipment but also with all sorts of staples. Everything is immaculately clean and feels new. Mary provided delicious apple muffins and banana bread for us, and was an attentive and thoughtful host. She's added an attractive portico over the door since the Airbnb photo was taken. We were surprised to find an airy screened patio adjacent to the casita. Her directions are very precise to guide you through a little maze of driveways - it was helpful that we arrived in daylight. The location is beautiful, and feels remote when you are there, but route 68 is nearby and provides easy access to Taos, Dixon, Espanola and Santa Fe. The Embudo Valley is lovely, with orchards and the Rio Grande running through it, enclosed by beautiful, with steep rocky walls. We look forward to coming back in the summer so Christine, an artist, can do some painting, and we can both explore some of the places Mary lists on her Airbnb site.

Mary is the most generous and gracious host I could wish for! She was courteous, prompt in correspondence, and willing to do what she could for me to make me feel comfortable. The casita wasn't in as remote of a surrounding as I'd imagined, but it was quiet and peaceful and lovely. Mary keeps it so clean and well-appointed with anything I could have wished for, and she went the extra mile to provide special perks that were much appreciated after 8 hours on the road. Arriving at her door was a huge relief, and I wish I could have had more than two nights stay. It was in a great location to explore surrounding areas, and I quickly learned how much more there is for me to see in Northern New Mexico! I will come back whenever I can, and will hope that Mary and her special Casita del Bosque is there for me to enjoy again.

Everything about Mary’s house has already been stated in previous reviews. Communication hospitality, friendliness are just a few of the special qualities Mary naturally extended to me as well as her canned pears and other food offerings . If you are looking for solitude and the natural beauty of New Mexico this is the place to go. You won’t be diss appointed.

Lovely little casita in a scenic setting. Picture window affords expansive view of Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and exquisite sunrises, to the east. Mary has created a guidebook with everything you need to know about the casita and the surrounding area. The casita is pristinely clean and beautifully decorated. While the location feels wonderfully remote (and quiet), it's within an easy drive to many of Northern New Mexico's popular tourist sites and best kept secrets. Mary is a gracious yet unobstrusive hostess, and I count her among my good friends (which didn’t influence this review).

Mary’s casita was exactly what we had hoped for and more. Her place is located off the beaten path along a country road in Velarde. When we first arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find a variety of delicious homemade baked breads and cookies, fresh fruit, and a big pitcher of ice water in the fridge (among other healthy food). Everything was spotless and thoughtfully decorated. The views from the huge picture window and porch are stunning (fall is such a lovely time to be there). It is approximately a half hour drive to Ojo Caliente and about the same distance to Ghost Ranch. Casita Del Bosque is such a warm and cozy place to be after long days of wandering about. The beds are so comfortable and there is a nice assortment of reading material about New Mexico there. One morning we walked up the hill behind the casita for gorgeous views of the valley. We really enjoyed chatting with Mary and feel so lucky to have found this place. On our last day, she told us to check out the petroglyphs that are about a 5 minute drive from the house. We did this on our way out and probably wouldn’t have noticed them otherwise. Thank you so much for your generous hospitality, Mary!

After spending two years in rural Kenya with the Peace Corps, my husband and I were sold on country living. We found our home here in Lyden more than 40 years ago. In addition to a career in health care and raising two daughters, I've been able to indulge my passions for cooking, birding, quilting and fitness in this lovely quiet place.
As an Airbnb guest I've experienced some wonderfully surprising places. As a host I hope to give my guests this same kind of experience by sharing some of what makes Northern New Mexico so special.
