This home is the most incredible place on air bnb! We were lucky enough to book it without fully realizing how perfect it was. The jukebox kept us dancing in the evenings, and the coffee and kitchen was perfect to cook food for all the meals in-between. We loved all of Darlene's suggestions on where to snorkel, where to catch the beach, and if she tells you to go visit Gary - DO IT! We enjoyed borrowing the bicycles and headlamps for a sunset at the lava viewing area. It was the most beautiful and surreal experience. I only wish we had stayed longer. Until next time!

Always a pleasure to share music and Hawaii with friends: It's magical. We were so glade you enjoyed the bicycles and the Lava. Lava viewing is natures show and no-one knows more about the lava than Gary. We agree listening to the jukebox keeps you dancing and mellow: How nice you could relax and do so much during your stay; your spirit made Hawaii special for us and we hope to see you in the future. The Music Cave of Refuge was excellent and relaxing. The manager - Darlene - was the impeccable concierge attending to every question with solutions and suggestions. All the equipment (bikes, popcorn machine, movie equipment, snorkel gear, etc) were clean and working well. This home was perfect in every way - in a rain forest setting with a view of the ocean, walking distance to the famous Uncle's Wednesday Night Market and a grocery and liquor store in Kalapana. There was no hint of mildew at the house but we'll were lulled to sleep by frogs and songbirds every night.

We absolutely enjoyed staying there. It's quiet, safe, close to the lava viewing. You can see when someone made a house beautifully for himself and just rents it out when he's away. You can see and hear the ocean. Darlene was super helpful providing us with all the needed info and maps. There are 5 new bikes in the garage, and we were happy to be able to use them for free. If you want to bike to lava flow, bikes there cost $20/day to rent.

This place was the best place I've stayed in HI so far. Great for lava access. Robert went above and beyond in being helpful and the care taker, Darlene, was extremely gracious.

As a family with three little kids, we spent a great week in the Music Refuge! We loved the lava and tropical environment all at the same time, the music from the juke box and the music from the forest and ocean, Darlene's stories and advice. A week is just not long enough!

We try to do little things so people can feel like it is their home and have something special so families can share experiences and find their own space. Our guest were a wonderful family that found the right balance in the games and music in the home and the magical lava surroundings with the tropical smells and blends of sounds Ocean, Palms, and Frogs. A true lava story by Darlene on losing her home to the lava just adds icing to the adventure. We were so happy for the brief moment that was shared with us. Mahalo Darlene & Bob

2 words: Book it! It is better than described. You'll have everything you want and more. You can easily go to the volcano, the lava flow (they have bikes) the observatory. Only you need a car. Be prepared to be waowed. Darlene the local host is a feature in herself. A gem.

Your Host 'Bob' has worked a decade overseas assisting people in nations ravaged by wars to rebuild their lives and nation. During the time overseas 'Bob' was called the 'movie man' not because he knew much about movies but because Bob would share a movie with everyone: Sharing a move led to sharing popcorn and sometimes teaching people of other nations how to make popcorn in a theater popcorn machine: Bob left many popcorn machines around the world and many friendly popcorn lovers. During those 10 years, Bob had little time to visit the wonderful home and retreat he wants to share with you. For Bob, relaxation was no longer than 21 days home at Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua - 'Music Cave of Refuge' and making Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua a special place of refuge to relax, reflect and share. Darlene our co-host would put back in order the projects Bob did not finish. Darlene lived during my long time overseas at my home in the downstairs living area: I am happy to say Darlene still lives in the downstairs unit of the home and can be your best guide to the islands or she can be invisible: Your Choice. Darlene managed a Hostel for more than 3 years that specialized in eco-tourism and hiking (a favorite stop for world travelers). Darlene has been an island resident for 26 years. Now that Darlene is retired it is wonderful to have her around as a friend and resource. I encourage you to consider the advantages of a home with such a great friend and resource: We hope you can relax as we do at Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua - with our Hawaii and World knowledge - We truly believe there is no finer place in Hawaii or the World.
Aloha and Mahalo from Darlene and Bob!
