We stayed for a month in house and it was a fantastic experience from beginning to end. The house is set in a beautiful hilltop location amidst fields of corn and cows, a local owl and a few friendly neighbors. The nights are silent and the stars abundant. It has breathtaking views and sunsets over the Pyrenees –best in the area due to its setting on a hill. The house was perfect for us: spacious and without clutter – so our 15-month old could run around without interference of excessive furniture. The kitchen is stocked, the rooms have ample storage for clothes, bedding, towels, there is a washer and dryer, clothing line, and cleaning supplies and paper products. Furthermore, the beds are exceptionally comfortable. The master bath is a treat – huge, with a walk-in shower and Jacuzzi. The other two bathrooms have stall showers – comfortable but a bit tight for my 80-year-old father. The house is a converted barn that Nathan and Anna renovated themselves with wonderful taste. The outside yard was inviting with a nice lawn, table and chairs – and we dined outside nightly.
The location of the house in Aquitaine France is lovely. There are abundant sources of water – two main rivers and a host of entry points to these rivers as well as a few lakes. The rivers are great for swimming and also host an active rafting community – and there are several places for rentals. There are also a lakes – some with beaches and swimming. The neighboring towns are quintessential French countryside towns – beautiful flowers, quaint cafes, and historical sites of interest. You travel generally by single lane roads in the countryside that are bucholic and there are a few noteworthy restaurants in the area that we enjoyed. Within 60-90 minutes you can reach Biarritz, wonderful Atlantic beaches, the Pyrenee foothills and hiking, and Pau -- a beautiful city to the East.
For us the house, the location, and the environment are excellent. However, what truly makes this a stand-out property are the hosts themselves. Nathan and his family are wonderful. From prior to booking to even after we left , Nathan was in contact with us – providing us with anything and everything we needed. Before arriving, he sent several detailed emails with information about all the activities in the area. When we arrived, they had unpacked and set-up the furniture for our baby – and so we had a crib, changing table, playroom with lots of toys and books at our disposal – which made the trip SO much easier. Furthermore, throughout the trip they were super helpful in suggesting activities, providing directions, giving instructions and being a resource for navigating and touring the area. They were the perfect neighbors during the week we overlapped and they stayed in the Gite – their children helped entertain our daughter, we shared drinks a few nights while watching the sunset. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience!
