Rowntree Wharf is probably York’s best industrial building. Originally one of the largest flour mills in Europe, it was founded by Henry Leetham in 1860. The building was situated between the River Foss and Wormald’s Cut, towering over what was then the slum district of Hungate (which is now the hub of city centre housing development). It was supplied with grain by barge. The mill closed in 1930 and in 1935 it became the Rowntree and Co’s Navigation Warehouse. Gradually it fell out of use, as road and rail replaced river transport. Cocoa beans were brought to the wharf until the 1960s. In 1989 it was converted into flats and offices by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Living in a grade 2 listed building is a great privilege. The walls are very thick so it's extremely quiet inside. The corridors are wide with large cast-iron columns from the mill. But five minutes away, you are in the buzz of the city - either historic buildings, museums and walls, or modern cafe's and restaurants.

100% recomendable.

Doug's place is central and yet secluded. There's a lot to get around to see in York but walking is so easy. Lots of places to eat and hang out. Carole and Doug are amazing hosts!

We arrive at midnight but our lovely host still waited for us and let us leave our luggage at home while spending our day trip in York. They are amazing people that you will appreciate.

Doug and Carole were so kind before and during our stay. They were happy to provide advice regarding our trip, and we wouldn't have known how to tour the Moors without all their help. When we arrived, Carole was waiting to let us in and provided us with tea, maps, and public transportation information. The room was spotless and comfortable, with lots of light and everything you could need, including shampoo, soap, towels, and a hair dryer. The bathroom was modern and clean, and the entire flat was cozy and comfortable. It's also very well-located, about a ten-minute walk from the center of York. I have no complaints and would recommend Doug, Carole, and their home to anyone.

Carole and Doug were absolutely delightful! They had tons of recommendations and directions for us. I highly recommend staying with them if ever in York. Their place is close to the city centre, nice and quiet, perfect for resting after a a busy day of walking and sightseeing. They were both so friendly, I feel like I can't say enough positive things about staying at their place.

Doug and Carole live in York. Doug works at York St John University and Carole is retired. In our spare time we like to walk, read and drink coffee but not necessarily in that order. We like meeting new people and exploring new places.
