Rowntree Wharf is probably York’s best industrial building. Originally one of the largest flour mills in Europe, it was founded by Henry Leetham in 1860. The building was situated between the River Foss and Wormald’s Cut, towering over what was then the slum district of Hungate (which is now the hub of city centre housing development). It was supplied with grain by barge. The mill closed in 1930 and in 1935 it became the Rowntree and Co’s Navigation Warehouse. Gradually it fell out of use, as road and rail replaced river transport. Cocoa beans were brought to the wharf until the 1960s. In 1989 it was converted into flats and offices by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Living in a grade 2 listed building is a great privilege. The walls are very thick so it's extremely quiet inside. The corridors are wide with large cast-iron columns from the mill. But five minutes away, you are in the buzz of the city - either historic buildings, museums and walls, or modern cafe's and restaurants.
