This is a wonderful, tranquil place to stay to experience traditional Japanese culture. It's a lovely house in a great location walking distance to many sites and convenient bus routes as well. The hosts were always helpful and friendly and the other guests were weloming and lovely. Highly recommend!

Kuramaguchi is located north of Kyoto in a very charming residential area called Kita-ku where life seems to slow down and you can truly experience traditional Japanese life. I had a perfect stay at Hidekazu-san’s beautiful Machiya. I felt so welcomed from the moment of arrival (Thank you so much dear Asami-san!) and all my pre-arrival questions were answered within minutes. I am very impressed by the warm hospitality. It is not just renting a room, I have had the chance to learn so much about the Japanese Culture and Customs from my Host and my awesome room mates (all long staying Japanese residents, which they call Hidekazu-san’s Machiya their warm home away from home!). During my stay, Hidekazu-san organized so many beautiful activities, e.g. Mochi making in snowy Countryside of Keihoku, arranged a private Shamisen (three-stringed Japanese musical instrument) class for me with the famous Goshiro Kineya, guided tours around the local neighborhood with Miyasaka-san, Bonenkai gathering with other shared house neighbors and much more. Last but not least beautiful dinner evenings with my room mates by having traditional Oden home cooking in our shared Tatami living room facing to the most beautiful little Garden. Simply priceless experience! Thank you from the bottom of my heart dear Hidekazu-san and Asami-san!

The house is very convenient. Although it is quite far from train station, it is near many bus stops. I felt comfortable to live there because there are many facilities such as washing machine, hot water, kitchen, wifi and so on. One thing that made me feel quite uncomfortable is the small toilet.

Hidekazu is a great host and very attentive person. He always responded my messages within a few minutes and he made everything to make me feel like home in Kyoto, I would totally love to stay in Funaoka shared house again without hesitation. The house is in a convenient location, with very friendly people staying there and a beautiful garden.
