Wide Waters is the historic Owasco Lake home built by writer Samuel Hopkins Adams. On a quiet cove with a scenic, rural, wooded lot, it features beautiful sunsets, a gentle beach for swimming or fishing, and where boats can be launched. Family gathering fun! Also ** brand new this year ** Del Lago Casino is open with all kinds of gaming and nightlife. At 27 miles away, you're close enough to go have some fun if you like, but far enough away to not get caught up in the hustle bustle.

El lugar

Wide Waters presents an impressive lake shore appearance with its stone and stucco construction and it's level shoreline on the east side of Owasco Lake. The home is 7,838 square feet of which 5,718 is living space. The first floor is spacious yet warm, perfect for entertaining. The lake-side living room with its stone fireplace, deep wood paneling and extensive bookshelves is approximately 18' x 35'. It is the perfect hub for lake parties and is adjacent to an 18' x 24' lakeside dining room with stone walls, slate floor, crystal chandelier and a massive fireplace with propane insert. The large country wood paneled kitchen contains fascinating amenities of a bygone era including a large wood “hotel" stove and the home's original walk-in ice room. Just off the kitchen you will find a breezeway room that beckons for morning coffee in the warm embrace of a babbling brook. And the first floor would not be complete without an entertainment room. It is adjacent to the kitchen and is the perfect size to just settle in with family for some television watching at the end of the day. It has a queen size sofa bed. And there is a half bath on the first floor for convenience as well.

The master bedroom suite of Wide Waters faces the lake with ample windows for a stunning view. The bedroom has a king size bed and a lovely stone fireplace with an early antique Franklin Stove insert. There is an adjacent full bath with sunken tub and separate shower. And an adjacent sitting room with plenty of closet space and a full size bed. A second lake side bedroom has breathtaking lake and sunset views, and its own private bathroom with heated floors, clawfoot tub and separate shower. Next is the Creekside Suite with queen size bed and an adjacent sleeping porch with two twin beds. The third bath on the second floor is outfitted with both a shower and a clawfoot tub. It can be accessed from either the hallway or sleeping porch. There are two additional bedrooms each with queen size beds and lovely creek or inland views. These bedrooms are not air conditioned, but they both have easy access to bathrooms via hallway doors.

Disponible para huéspedes

There is plenty of lake access! This property boasts 159' of level shoreline on Owasco Lake. There is a grill, tables, chairs and a tree swing for your enjoyment on the beach, dock and patio. Feel free to launch your boat from the property and pull it up to the dock or bring your kayaks! If you don't have either, they can easily be rented!

Guests will have access to the entire living area of the house as well as the entire yard, dock and shoreline of the property. Guests will not have access to the garage, one closet and attic areas.

Even if the weather isn't cooperating, there are several places within the house to enjoy yourselves. With all of the books and history, you'll never get bored. This really is our home away from home. Every amenity you could think of is probably already there.

Otros aspectos destacables

A note for you history buffs, Wide Waters is a historic treasure. It is the original home of the famous, local writer Samuel Hopkins Adams. Adams named his beautiful estate "Wide Waters," quite simply because it faced one of the widest sections of Owasco Lake. Adams wrote tirelessly at this tranquil setting but was also known to host wonderful parties by the lake that were attended by some of the great celebrities of the day.
Adams was one of the first writers of the 20th Century to specialize in both journalism and fiction. He wrote for the New Yorker magazine, testified before Congress on the subject of patent medicine, and is most famous for writing the original story upon which the classic film “It Happened One Night" is based. This amazing stone tudor home still bears many of the marks from the life and legacy of this great literary figure.

And if you are looking for adventure while visiting, there are many things to do and see in this area: Wine Trails, Sweet Treat Trail, Cheese Trail, Beer Trail, the home of Harriet Tubman and William Seward, Fillmore Glen National Park, plus much more! Auburn is History's Hometown. Plus the all new del Lago Casino is only a short drive to the west. And the Village of Skaneateles is only a short drive to the east and Ithaca a short drive to the south.

And if you are planning to visit for a family celebration you may want to reach local vendors... Janet can help with contact information for all the details... everything .... boat rentals, wedding flowers, local artists, custom apparel for your family... let your stay be one you fondly remember for years to come.

We loved everything about this beautiful lake house! We had several people coming from out of town for our wedding in Marcellus and so we needed a place big enough to host our guests. Janet's home was absolutely perfect! Everyone was comfortable, and there were plenty of space for people to go off on their own, or be part of the party. Since we had quite a few folks in and out over the weekend, and knew we might be up a little later in the night, it was important to have a space that was relaxed and secluded so as to not disturb neighbors. Again, we hit the jackpot- we weren't an overly rowdy bunch by any means but we certainly were not quiet by 10 pm ;) Overall, we would go back and stay there in a heartbeat . Gorgeous space, perfect for weddings, family reunions, etc. and Janet was very helpful, responsive and knowledgable of the area. One of the guests that stayed is even planning to rent the house for an event next May, and I think we will be going back to upstate just for this!

We had a delightful experience with Janet’s home. Several points stand out: • Communicating with Janet is easy. She responded to our questions, she reached out proactively to check how things were going the morning after we arrived, and she stopped by just as we were departing. She was an excellent Airbnb host, I would say one of the very best from the 20+ Airbnb stays we have done. • Janet also went above-and-beyond when we had difficulty finding someone who could babysit our grandson during the visit (we were in town for a family wedding weekend). After trying numerous places, we reached out to Janet in desperation. She identified someone within a day or two and they were terrific. • Janet displayed a very high level of thoughtfulness: every room had cut flowers in it when we arrived and several bottles of water. She left the materials to make S’mores in the kitchen. There was plenty of information about local activities and a clear house guideline book. • This is an ideal Airbnb for a large group. We were an extended family with six couples and a baby, and the house held us all. The kitchen was sufficiently furnished for a group that size, and we tended to eat in the dining room with the gas fireplace on. • The house is perfect for summer relaxation—bonfire pit, kayaks on hand, dock, and so forth. Think of it like visiting your metaphorical “grandparent’s house”, with ample space for everyone, interesting places to explore, an eclectic library to peruse, a huge kitchen, and private beach on the lake. It would be an excellent “home base” for wine tours, brewery tours, fall foliage tours, etc. Nearby are the charming small towns of Skaneateles, Auburn with its historical sites (the William Seward house is exceedingly interesting if history is your thing, plus home and memorials for Harriet Tubman), and Seneca Falls, where the suffragette movement got its start. The setting is in the rolling farmland of New York’s “Finger Lakes” region, with lovely vistas no matter the direction you drive. • Drive you will, because this house really is accessible only by car. It is a drive to any store or activity—some people will regard that as a problem, for us it was an excellent “away from it all” feature. • The house is “vintage” (it was adapted from an old farmhouse in the 1920’s and that is the overall feel), so it is a little challenging if accessibility is an issue. It DOES have a working, antique chair lift on one staircase. It has modern amenities (microwave, cable, wifi, etc.) but with fun antiques (like the immense wood cooking stove in the kitchen). • What I wish I had known beforehand was to bring along a coffee mug and a book. The book to contribute to the library, and the mug to add to the collection in the kitchen—the more obscure the coffee mug logo the better! Thank you, Janet, for your...

Janet was a wonderful host. The house was just like the pictures. It was our first visit to Lake Owasco and the Finger Lakes, and she is incredibly knowledgable regarding the history, natural treasures, restaurants, museums, vineyards, etc. Everything we needed was a short drive. Thanks for all your wonderful recommendations. We can't wait to come back.
