Room smells like mildew and it is not oceanfront; I could barely see the ocean from the room

Nice and convenient resort- good restaurants and several pools along with ocean views, and friendly/helpful staff. Right near the airport and halfway between Waimea canyon and the north shore beaches. The room itself is clean and well stocked, with a really comfortable bed. We had a very pleasant stay here! Note: this room is in a resort that has a free airport shuttle for guests who book through the resort, but not for those who are staying in privately owned rooms. We had a very rude cab driver who basically gave us a hard time for wanting a ride to the resort from the airport because he assumed we thought we were too good for the shuttle when in fact we were not entitled to it. This is not a negative for the resort or this room, but a helpful tip to not let the taxi drivers bully you and to let them know you aren't allowed to take the free shuttle because you booked privately. For some reason this was a huge issue to our driver (even though we were paying customers) and it resulted in a very awkward and embarrassing start to our vacation.

We arrived at the Kauai Beach Resort after a week's stay at a fine resort on the Big Island. Check in at the hotel's front desk was a bit awkward, as the rules of using the resort are a bit different when you've rented a unit from a private owner. The front desk staff was very nice, though and explained how everything would work. We were excited to explore Kauai and to enjoy this resort. Upon entering the unit we were welcomed by a strong odor of mold, mildew and old carpeting. As we moved further into the room the odor became overwhelming. We thought; (URL HIDDEN) near the (URL HIDDEN) near the ocean. Some odor might be acceptable under these circumstances, right? Wrong. After a full minute, our noses began to burn. I mean, literally burn from the dank odor in the room. We noticed the wallpaper was peeling off of the walls, and found a rusted shelf of some sort in the closet. The bedding, window treatment and bathroom were from the dark ages. We sat down looked at each other. We both knew, in spite of the fact that we had paid almost $1,000 months ago for this room, we could not stay here. Even sitting on a chair or the bed seemed unacceptable when the room smelled so bad. Was it clean? Was it safe? Neither of us felt we could sleep in the room. We even thought---well---we won't be in the room much so does it really matter? Yes. It mattered. It was THAT bad. The hotel staff was very helpful in our time of need, and fortunately they were able to offer us a room at the resort. We had to pay for it in full as it was a last minute reservation. We invited the front desk manager to look at the room and she was shocked at it's condition. She explained that some owners of the condo units had chosen not to update their rooms when the rest of the resort was updated. We called the Hula Now management and they tried to weasel out of dealing with us by writing us an email that said "Sorry you canceled your vacation to Kauai, we can't give you a refund since you cancelled." After several emails back and forth we called Air B&B directly and they helped us out. They were wonderful, actually. Save yourself the heartache and hassle. Skip this unit until they renovate. I'm not sure where the positive reviews for this unit came from. Possibly from people who don't care about odor or cleanliness.

The location is perfect!!! It's a beautiful resort with beach access and a great pool. The restaurant is ok but I suggest going to other near by places to eat. The room is your typical hotel room nothing over the top but nothing bad either. It does have a kind of musky/wet towel smell and the a/c seemed weak. We would definitely suggest it to friends with kids. The price and location are perfect for your paradise getaway.

Beautiful Resort and pool. The room, was ok. Our AC did not work for majority of our stay, making for a difficult sleep with the hot weather. However, I contacted Hula Now and they were able to send someone from the resort to fix the AC for our last night there. Being that Hula Now is a private owner, we were a little restricted to some resort anemnities such as cleaning service and airport shuttle. The resort offers a rental car service which you do not have to pay parking fee ($25 per day) if you go through them. So we waited to save some extra $ however, they very rarely had any cars so we ended up going to the airport (through Uber) and renting a car for our stay. Overall, good central location to drive around the island and explore then come back and jump in the pool, which is exactly what we were looking for.
