El lugar

Travelers are welcome to stay in the cozy and private bedroom with attached private bathroom, kitchen and peaceful garden in my home located 3 km from the centre of town. Close to restaurants, public transport hubs, Russet homestay has everything the visitor needs as a base to explore Shillong and the surrounding traditional communities that remain largely unexposed to tourism.
I am happy to be your host and share with you my tips for travel around the towns and villages of the culturally and geographically diverse state of Meghalaya.(URL HIDDEN)have been a working for many years in the state's rural development and I have travelled and worked with community people in even the most remote parts of the state. Nothing would make me happier than supporting my guest to develop itineraries so that they can experience the unique natural and man-made wonders including our matrilineal societies, suspension bridges made of plaited vines(living root bridges) and other wonders. I can help guests to arrange transport and accommodation for a reasonable price in this area in which tourism services remain undeveloped.

Your privacy will be completely respected but I like to invite all my guests for a chat and a laugh. I would like to provide an orientation to this most diverse State of Meghalaya for new visitors, and swap stories about our culture and places with those who have perhaps travelled here before. I'm keen to help you to put together detailed or loose itineraries, source transport and accommodation and access to community events and activities through out the State at the best possible price.

Was stood up by this host. I realize she may have had good reasons for the mixup but for a reservation to be confirmed, and then not be informed of a sudden change in her plans, didn't seem good. (She did return my money very promptly.) I can only see my perspective -- waiting in the rain with luggage in Shillong, after a confirmed reservation, and struggling for some 4 hours after getting to her doorstep to get to the alternative place that she directed me to, after I managed to reach her. That was called Bo Ville, an AirBnb host who insisted I come in outside of AirBnb, paying almost thrice what I had planned, for a badly maintained room. And Bo Ville insisted on cash (despite all the recent howling in India for more digital payments). I do not know anything else about what caused the problem. But given my experience in Shillong, I believe there is a general problem in Shillong, both among regular hotels, and among homestays, to create artificial scarcity, and then exploit a traveler's resulting plight. Whether this particular unit, Russet Homestay, is guilty of that, I can't say for sure. But while Meghalaya is a wonderful -- even magical -- place, and should be seen and enjoyed and admired by far more people, I strongly recommend staying outside of Shillong (e.g. Mawkriah, Mawsynram, Cherrapunji, Lawbah). Traffic in Shillong is worse than traffic in all the Indian metros combined, so if you plan a visit to say, Shillong Peak, you will spend 3-4 hours in a traffic jam on NH6 inside Shillong, and then for an hour on the road immediately leading to Shillong Peak, for a few minutes at Shillong Peak. Would be faster to just walk to Shillong Peak. Outside of Shillong, my experience with both people and places in Meghalaya has been excellent. Just avoid staying much in Shillong.

OMG where do I even begin?? Anne and Maik are the BEST Airbnb hosts EVER! I have stayed in a lot of Airbnb stays but this one tops the list by miles! Anne and Maik are such warm, friendly and generous souls and in this stay we made friends for life! They are so forthcoming with information and assistance and went above and beyond to make sure that we had a comfortable stay and a great experience in Shillong. My husband and I stayed here for 5 days (3 initially but I extended it to 5 cos we just didn't want to leave!) leading up to our wedding. We had a last minute setback in our wedding plans when our wedding dinner venue cancelled plans - Anne offered to have the wedding in her house!! They helped us find caterers and hire disposable plates, cups etc and offered to drive us around and fix things! They gave us a lovely bottle of rum and made us delicious dinner when we were sick, did our laundry, prepared hot tea and snacks when we returned home in the rain. We enjoyed the sumptuous breakfast that was prepared every morning! Breakfast conversations with them were something we used to look forward to and we miss them both so dearly! Caesar and Tinja are such sweethearts too and we plan to visit Shillong again just to meet them all! As for the house - it's impeccable! It is very spacious and clean and very tastefully decorated. It has 2 beds, a seating area with a TV, a kitchenette (stocked with everything you will ever need), a passageway with a cupboard and place to hang clothes and a very clean and spacious bathroom. It has a private entrance so it's really like you have a house all to yourself. The room overlooks the garden and a barbecue area which guests can use. We clicked some beautiful pictures in her gorgeous garden :) The highlight of our stay was Anne and Maik making it to our wedding! They even brought us a lovely gift! We're so happy and feel blessed to have met such wonderful people. I can't thank them enough for all that they did for us and am very eager to host them both when they come to our house!

There are not words adequate to describe how much I enjoyed staying at Anne's place. She is an amazing lady with a warm and welcoming family and I immediately felt like an honorary member of their family. They took such good care of me making sure I had everything I needed for daily adventures including a yummy breakfast and a hot cup of tea when I returned exhausted. The room has all the amenities including great wifi, a well-stocked kitchenette, and guides on what to see and where to eat in Shillong and the surrounding area. My only regret is that I could not stay longer or that I don't live closer, because I would love to chat with Anne all the time. You should definitely stay here. Thanks Anne and family!!!

I loved my experience in Shillong with Anne her family! Anne and Mike are wonderful hosts, and I enjoyed getting to know them during my stay. Anne went out of her way to make me feel welcome when I arrived, and she made sure I stayed warm by bringing me an extra blanket on a particularly chilly night. The room is incredibly cozy and has everything I was looking for plus lovely extras, like a hairdryer, robe, and well-stocked kitchenette. It's in a quiet neighborhood close to many small shops and restaurants, and I loved exploring the area around their place. I can't wait to go back!

Anne has been a great host. I visited Russet early this year and i was pleasantly surprised by the hospitality and warmth shown by the host Anne and everyone else in the house along with Caesar, the cute one. The location is good, away from the madding crowd of police bazaar, though not a scenic spot. Well the host more than makes up for whatever you loose by way of location of the homestay. I was impressed and already recommended this home away from home to few of my friends. Will take this opportunity to thank Anne for everything.
