Sport recreation and sightseeing
The valley is famous as a centre of mountain recreation and sports activities. The Tour de France will be passing through the valley in 2022 on 19th July.
Walking: two beautiful marked footpaths can be accessed directly from the house. These connect to all the many well-marked trails in the valley and beyond, including the GR 10 path that crosses the Pyrenees, connecting the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.

Swimming: the outdoor swimming pool in Auzat (July-August) (10 minutes) is surrounded by mountains. or you can go wild water swimming in the many mountain streams, The hot spa at Ax les Thermes (40 minutes) offers a luxurious experience throughout the year.

Other activities include climbing, including a practice climbing wall. (10 minutes by car) We also have a "via ferrata" (spectacular but safe climbing with fixed steel loops to attach to) and an adventure park with tree-walks and zip slides. You can go trout fishing, caving, canoeing, canyoning and paragliding. All of these activities can be supervised by highly qualified guides who ensure your safety at all times. You can now hire electric mountain bikes. For more Information see the aventuremontcalm website.

Sightseeing: the valley has a fascinating local history. Not to be missed are the magnificent 14,000-year-old Niaux cave paintings, one of the few European cave art sites still open to the public (recently featured in Anthony Gormley’s “How Art Began” on BBC 4). Tours are available in English. This can be complemented by a visit to the Parc Pyrénéen de l'art préhistorique where the interior of the cave has been faithfully reproduced and where you and the children can learn about the life of our ancestors, for example by learning how to throw spears and make fire the way our ancestors did.
In the XIII century the region was a centre of the Cathar religion and we are within 45 minutes of the breathtaking castle of Montségur where the Cathars took their last stand against the forces of the King of France and the Pope. The valley was an important people-smuggling route to Spain during WW2.

Cultural events: many and varied events take place in July-August including the popular blues festival in Vicdessos, which attracts hundreds. Each local village holds its fete in July or August to which visitors are welcome. A full programme of what’s on can be obtained from the local tourist office or online at the pyrenees-ariegeoises website.
