The experience I had with Patrick was terrible. We rented over Labor Day, and we agreed to pay 1500 for the week plus weekend. He didn't update the listing, so I was only charged for the weekend through Airbnb. We agreed I would pay him the difference upon arriving (which now I know violates Airbnb's terms of service, *never agree to pay offsite) Patrick claimed we still owed him 115 dollars, which was the amount Airbnb charged for the service fee. I was baffled at the time, and said I couldn't pay until I got home since I didn't have my checkbook. After looking at the listing again, and our communication prior, I found I stated clearly in our messages that the 1500 would include the cleaning/service fee. He continued to text me throughout the weekend saying he could have his dad stop by to pick up the money. I contacted Airbnb with the issue and they instructed me to 1. not pay him any more money and 2. to make sure our communication was all documented through Airbnb. I promptly messaged him on Airbnb saying that I would like to make sure any further communication was on the Airbnb message board. He then called me the next day, which I let go to voicemail, stating it looked like I contacted Airbnb and to contact him. I messaged him through Airbnb again asking to keep all communication there. He then left me another voicemail while my friends and I were trying to enjoy dinner on our last night saying if I didn't call him back he would contact local authorities. The police showed up and told us they received a phone call with a complaint that renters were still at his residence that were supposed to be checked out by that day (Sunday). I had to explain the whole situation to the officer, and I showed him my Airbnb reservation that stated we rented and paid for the residence until Monday. The officer called him back, and told us Patrick said he was going to come to the residence himself. I then had to contact Airbnb again, worried that he would come kick us out just because of this 115 dollars that he was mad Airbnb got and not him. My contact at Airbnb handled the situation, gave him a call, and instructed him to leave us alone. He never ended up coming, but it came close to ruining my weekend.
I would not recommend renting through Patrick, and I would be very careful to make sure all your communication stays through Airbnb, and I would NEVER agree to pay him cash or anything offsite. (Which I will never do again, since it is against Airbnb rules.. live and learn.)
That all being said...the cottage location was great, less than a 1/2 mile to the beach. There were lots of beds. If Patrick hadn't been so terrible to work with... the weekend would have been great.
