Big Quiet Camping provides a rugged cowboy camping experience. Witness nature's splendor just at the base of the geological phenomenon that is Heart Mountain. Stay in our traditional yurt and live just like the Mongolian nomads.

El lugar

Big Quiet Camping is a real, western camping experience. Please be fully aware that you are coming to immerse yourself in true Rocky Mountain camping experience. The yurt has a concrete floor and is a warm and comfortable space for as many as 8 people.

Our Location
Located just 3 miles east of historic Heart Mountain in The Big Horn Basin of WYOMING, lies Big Quiet Camping within the 450 Organic acres of Common Ground Farms. This farm is one of the only USDA certified organic Farms in the state of Wyoming, and is also home to Rocky Mountain Organic Meats.

The Land
Gaze across thousands acres of beautiful grassland and sagebrush and witness the natural wonders that brought many Native Americans to Heart Mountain to harness its healing energy. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a Cowboy or Native American camping experience then come to Big Quiet Camping. Enjoy the big starry skies, untamed lands and the rich cultural history of the Big Horn Basin. Your children will enjoy the Family Adventure of sleeping outside under the stars and planets of the Milky Way. And at the same learn about food and where it comes along with the effort it takes to raise food and process it.

Teepee - Each teepee offers enough room and comfort for a one night or a week. Sod floors with rugs and cots provided. Wall tents and range teepees have wood floors.

Restrooms - Our Restrooms are similar to Restrooms in the National Forest. Well ventilated Mens and Womens Outhouse.

Showers - Our on demand hot water Shower is located in a 10'x 10' Range Tent within our camping area. It features cedar flooring, and a washbasin for your hygienic needs.

They say the best part of camping is sitting around the campfire at night; Wide open skies above you, the sound of coyotes howling in the distance. That stuff is real, not just fiction made up in spaghetti westerns, and that's why we have built a communal fire pit. Come on down and bring your harmonica, ukulele, guitar, djembe, or dobro!

If staying up late and burning the midnight oil around the fire isn't your thing there are numerous other activities on the ranch to partake in. We have a horseshoe pit, numerous hiking and mountain bike trails nearby, and you can also take a tour of the ranch and learn a little bit about where our nation's food really comes from.

Disponible para huéspedes

We have over 250 acres of land surrounded by thousands of public land that is open to explore! You have access to Heart Mountain for day hikes, elevation at the top 8,200 feet. The views are worth the effort.

For the consideration of the other campers enjoying Big Quiet Camping please try to arrive and check in before 7pm.

Farm-To-Table Food
All guest’s will receive a fresh cooked breakfast in the morning!

As an organic ranch, we believe that respectful and sustainable food production is one of the most important things we can do to help solve our world's health and energy problems. We raise our animals in a humane setting that allows them the freedom they were meant to have from birth; wide open spaces and native vegetation. Our garden of various foods are grown without any pesticides or chemicals, and are planted, weeded, and harvested all by hand.

We believe that everyone should know where their food comes from. Shake the hand that grows your food.

Rod has a beautiful, kind daughter, and beautiful, quirky herding dogs in one of the most beautiful spots on Earth. I hasten to write such a good review out of selfishness, not wanting to drive more traffic to "Wild, Wonderful Wyoming". (I'm a South Dakotan, so we're always torn between sharing our beauty and keeping our secrets.) Traversing 14 at sunset, and dropping down into the sage prairie of the Big Horn Basin after a hail storm at 9000 feet, is the definition of awe. We didn't travel a lot as kids, but when we did, we piled into the '73 Buick Electra and wound over the mountains (usually in October snow) to more exotic Wyoming...always pronghorn, endless sagebrush, and riches, parks, and industry that never quite reached us. My dad worked in mining, teaching, and rodeo in Wyoming, so it has always held a special place in my heart for the ghosts of loves I never quite knew. (My biggest Wyoming achievement is placing third in triple jump against the Campbell County Camels; not quite like placing at Frontier Days, or having a successful ranch operation.) And so, Wyoming still remains out-of-reach whilst stirring my soul. A short drive from Rod's, you can see the dark reaches of a WWII internment camp, repurposed, retired planes, and travel to the ancient shores of the Sundance Sea. I needn't mention our first National Park, or the dizzying altitudes of some of the highest highways you'll ever travel, as that's a given, and more awe than you've ever experienced before, nor will ever get again. Thank you for sharing that which always eludes us, Rod, and let us know if it's ever possible for us to return the favor.

Michelle - What can I say? Your passionate, poetic review shows how much you appreciate the unique, stark beauty of this unique, high desert Wyoming environment. Your comments echo the very reason why I work hard to create unforgettable memories for people who stay at the farm. To continue the conversation about food, renewable energy, sustainability, respect for the environment and other Mad Farmer topics, please connect with me on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN). Stay grounded there in the Pacific Northwest. Rod Morrison PS - Emily says hi, Dragon and Lucy extend their paws, and my wife Lynn says you need to return next June so she can meet you and hike up Heart Mountain!

Our stay in the yurt was absolutley amazing! There were only 4 of us in there so it was very roomy. The campfire and hammocks added the ability to socialize with our fellow campers. We had a ton of fun and fully intend to visit again!

Tepees, yurt, tents and hammocks under a big sky. Great coffee and pancakes and very local pork sausage for breakfast. Special space for those new to the U.S. Wild West.

Rod and his wife were both very welcoming and hospitable. The breakfast served was exceptional. Just wish we had more time to explore the grounds and hike the hills.

Dan - We are glad you enjoyed your brief time on our farm. We just ordered hammocks for the new outside camp kitchen. Please consider a return trip next summer, when you can hike Heart Mountain and relax in a hammock!

Rod and Lynn make sure to spend time with guests which made for an individualized experience. They are lovely, friendly people and well rounded conversationists. We were made to feel welcome and comfortable. Rod called to confirm our arrival and directions making sure all went smoothly. Needless to say the stay was delightful and we would recommend this rustic place to anyone.

Respuesta de Rod:
Thanks for the lovely review, Jillian. You and your family should return next season, when the new outdoor kitchen is completed. We can continue the conversation while you relax in a hammock, coffee mug in hand!
