This bright & conveniently located homestead dates to 1919, or earlier. It's been thoughtfully restored with new bathroom, gas fireplace, fridge, dishwasher, wood flooring, and more. Enjoy the high-desert sunshine and superb trout fly-fishing on the Deschutes River. We are encouraging work retreats and catering to trout fisherman. A professional work environment is present for getting work-at-home office stuff done during the heat of the day, and fishing in the am and pm when it's best.
Maupin is a small community on a high bend of the Deschutes river, which is one of the best trout/steelhead rivers in the world. The cold waters flow through a high desert which receives about 10" of rainfall a year. In contrast to Portland just a couple hours away, Maupin is sunny most of the year and the air is dry; fragrant with the scent of juniper and sage brush.
This house predates the great fire that destroyed most of Maupin in 1922. We know because during our extensive renovation we discovered newspapers used as insulation that dated 1919. There are early photos of the community that show what must have been this one or two room frontier shelter, probably used by the early forest service or loggers. It is right on the main street in town, ideally located near the park, library, grocery store, hardware store, and Rainbow Tavern! (a Maupin institution)
We've installed new hardwood floors, a new tile bathroom, new appliances (french door fridge, dishwasher, washer/dryer stack) and we've also installed a brand new propane fireplace for toasty convenient heat. For convenience in work and play, I have installed high speed wireless internet to feed Netflix and HULU on a new LG tv. A work desk and Aeron chair is handy to the stove for getting some work done in between the morning and evening bite.
Our covered front porch swing is the best place in town to comfortably watch old cars, bike races, and an assortment of other destination rallies. Or relax in the fresh air and read a book. The moon rises across the street in the summer and there is a swift colony in the chimney of the Tudor house you may see if you're lucky enough to be present at the right time. We also have recently finished a beautiful grotto out back with comfy chairs, a fire pit (seasonal ban), and grill. We string a sun shade in the summer.
We planted a living fossil in front! Thought extinct for millions of years, Dawn Redwood dates back to Mesozoic times, some 150 million years ago. Living Dawn Redwoods were "discovered" in West Central China in 1941. Unlike its Redwood Family relatives, Dawn Redwood is a deciduous tree, losing its bronze leaves each autumn and unfurling bright green, silky new needles in spring. A truly unique and fascinating tree, rich in history and beautiful to behold. Dawn Redwood grows very rapidly, easily reaching heights of more than 100 feet at maturity. Say hello to our metasequoia.
