You will learn the basics of forging iron with a coal fired forge. You'll meet me at my shop, and with a hammer in hand you'll learn the basics of the art of blacksmithing. You will square, taper, twist, bend, scrolll, and flatten the metal into your own unique wall hook. Other things to note This is a rustic hands on work experience. Be prepared to get dirty! There are numerous dangers including smoke, fire, loud noises, sharp objects, and more.

You will be using a coal fired forge, treadle hammer, tongs, cross peen hammer and anvil, along with a 2"X72" belt grinder. We will be hand forging a railroad spike into a beautiful and functional knife. We will start by firing the coal forge and drawing out the handle with the treadle hammer. We will twist the handle and start drawing out the blade. Once we have a handle and blade formed we will "quench" the blade to harden it. We will use the grinder to put an edge on your finished Railroad Spike Knife.

Discover a part of Chicago only known by locals -- our miles-long system of underground tunnels known as "The Pedway." This engaging adventure pops you in and out of beautiful buildings, familiarizes you with the most interesting parts of the Pedway, and shows you the best hidden details downtown that people walk by every day. This is not a typical "must-see" tour for typical tourists -- it's a "must see" experience for travelers who want something BEYOND what's typical. The first half of our tour will include an introduction to Chicago's famous "Pedway" -- the mysterious system of tunnels downtown that keeps us all warm & dry in bad weather. Walking under entire blocks, we'll access interiors that seem to come up out of nowhere, hidden corridors of stained glass and more. We’ll then exit the Pedway to see some "secrets" hidden in public art and gardens, a tiny building you'll miss if you blink, a beautiful interior filled with marble and light, and one of the best places to buy Chicago-themed books. On this nostalgic and educational 2-hour walking tour, we will lead you on a "Christmas treasure hunt" through downtown Chicago in search of the most stunning and impressive Christmas trees and other holiday decorations — and we know where they are!
