Qué harás

Are you a book worm? Do you love the smell of (old) books? In this 3 hour workshop you will get a taste of the craft of bookbinding. You will make a non-adhesive binding using a traditional binding style that emerged in the late middle ages. You will get to grips with paper, thread and needle by starting of with a pamphlet binding. You will learn about paper grain, how to fold sections, how to sew this into a pamphlet binding. From their we will move on to your second binding, which is a long stitch binding. This is a multiple section binding, whereby the cover is sewn on directly using long stitches. You learn to make a cover with leather spine panels and tying up laces.

We are a Dutch couple that run since 2002 the Ox Bindery in the heart of the Ox Mountains. Benjamin is a qualified bookbinder and ICRI-accredited conservator in books, paper and parchment with over 20 years of experience. Our clients include libraries and universities. As well as conservation work we create new bespoke bindings. We are using traditional materials and binding techniques - often adapted from original historical binding. A highlight has been " Yeats 150" bindings commissioned by the Irish government as special gifts for the US president Obama, his family and the Irish President. In 2019 we rebound 109 ledgers from the Shelbourne hotel in leather and gold tooling. We offer also weekend bookbinding classes, please visit the website of the Ox Bindery. We run a self-catering accommodation 'Bed in Barn' also listed on Airbnb

Dónde estarás

The bookbinding class will take place in the heart of the Ox Mountains in our purpose built book conservation studio, equipped with cast iron antique book presses, board shears, guillotine cutter, foil blocking press etc. On this place was once a garage and before that a shed, as part of a small holding (farm) with a barn opposite the road, that is converted into a self-catering accommodation.
