This class is designed for those who have never painted, as well as seasoned artists who want a creative system reboot. I will demonstrate a variety of techniques I have used over the years to create a stunning abstract painting with ease. In addition, I show you how to use pigments and minerals unique to New Mexico that I hand-collected, and will give you some historical context about each, while hopefully inspiring you to look in your own communities for materials to add to your artwork. Composition, color theory, and design are weaved through the class with tips on how to use alternative tools and acrylic mediums to add visual interest to your pieces. Students receive ample one-on-one attention in this boutique-style art class due to its small size (max 6). During the last 5-minutes of class we will critique each other's work and share what we learned to close out the session. Your paintings will be easy to transport back home as they are on heavy-duty paper and lay flat in suitcases or carry-ons. You will find abstract painting a liberating and relaxing experience, and by the end of class will have the knowledge you need to experiment with these techniques at home.
An artist for 25 years, I have a Bachelor’s in Art History, Masters in Art Education, and have been teaching art to teenagers and adults for 12 years. I have exhibited my work in five solo and nine group shows, including "Feminists Under Forty," which was curated by Judy Chicago. My experience includes working with total novices as well as advanced artists looking to bring their work to the professional level. My paintings are featured in E. Ashley Rooney's "Contemporary Art of the Southwest" (2014), and I am currently represented by galleries in New Orleans and San Jose del Cabo.
All art materials necessary for the class: artist-quality watercolor paper, acrylic paint, mediums, brushes, aprons.
