Qué harás

Join me for a personally guided journey along a trail that's loved by locals, but little known by tourists. We'll walk the 4.25 mile trail along a beautiful wooded creek bordered by thick native foliage to search for treasures from the past. We'll learn about the area's coal mining history and seek out remnants of the past hidden from those unaware of the fascinating stories that haunt this urban outpost. See where President Rutherford Hayes visited, discover a hidden mine shaft and stumble upon relics of once-bustling towns that are being reclaimed by Mother Nature. You'll learn about the plants - the friends and the foes - and taste some along the way. You'll get to take a Forest Bath. These woods are filled with wonder and beauty. You won't forget this true Northwest experience - perfect for all ages. P.S. I have a wonderful, mellow yellow lab Scooby, who is happy to join - if you're looking for a dog fix and would like me to bring him along. Just let me know.
Other things to note
Bring sturdy walking shoes (tennis shoes are fine; no open-toed shoes, unless they are hiking sandals). Guide can provide transportation for an added fee.

I'm a Northwest native who is passionate about getting into the woods. I have been hiking in the Northwest for several decades and am skilled at leading groups. As a journalist and writer, I can captivate my guests' interest with tons of history and stories. I love Northwest art, history, hiking, running, walking and skiing. I try to get outside every day - rain or shine. Join me!

Dónde estarás

I'll pick you up at a central location on Mercer Island (easily accessible via public transportation) and we'll drive to the Coal Creek and Red Town trails, former home of three now-hidden coal mines. If the weather cooperates, we'll stop at a secret view spot along the way. Because of COVID restrictions, all passengers are required to wear masks inside the car. If you would prefer, you can drive your car to the trail head.

Cynthia offers a unique experience hiking in what was a coal mining settlement now overgrown. She is well versed in the history of the area and also a knowledgeable nature interpreter, educating us on the flora and fauna of the forest. The hike was well-paced, interesting and fun. I highly recommend this Airbnb experience with Cynthia!

Don't miss this experience in Seattle! It's close enough to the city that you can easily make a half-day out of this, and still enjoy the rest of your day in the city. She will also pick you up at a park-and-ride for $20 per carload. She was super accomodating - when we got there early she told us to find a coffee shop and met up with her there. Cynthia has extensive knowledge of the area and a true passion for the subject. I highly recommend this - as my first Airbnb "experience" I will definitely look into more of these types of excursions. How wonderful!

Cynthia is great! I enjoyed learning from her about area plants and mining histories, and she had great communication along the way. She was very easy to talk to and seemed genuinely interested in my background. Fun morning!

I booked this experience wanting to get into hiking and outside activities. This was perfect to start off with. Not too long of a hike only 3 hours but it was enough to get me hooked! Cynthia was also very knowledgeable in the background of the area and I learned so much!

The hiking experience with Cynthia was absolutely perfect! We had a large group with lots of varying personalities, and vastly different fitness levels. Cynthia made everyone feel fantastic. Cynthia’s love for nature and hiking made me want to experience a lot more in my life. I highly recommend this hiking experience with Cynthia. P.S. Her dog Scooby was a wonderful addition to our hike.
