Let a local nature host lead you on a guided hike through winter in our national forest here in the Big Bear Valley! Depending on the amount of snow we have on the ground we can either hike or snowshoe through our majestic forest full of oak and pine trees. Snowshoe rentals are not included but quite a few business like Blauers or Goldsmith's in the Big Bear Valley rent them out super cheap.
Bringing kids out for their first hike? I highly recommend my Pacific Crest Trail hike. This is an easy hike along the Pacific Crest Trail, and I often see wild burros here in the winter months.
My winter hikes are to areas such as:
Pacific Crest Trail above Baldwin Lake, Hiking ability easy
Snow Forest (An old abandoned ski resort with epic views of the lake) Hiking ability moderate to advanced, lots of altitude gain.
Holcomb Valley, an old mining area, hiking ability easy to moderate
Sugarloaf Mountain, hiking ability advanced, lots of altitude gain.
This listing is for my two-hour hike but if you wish to do a longer half-day hike to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, or Butler's Peak or partway up snowy San Gorgonio Trails I host those too. You can message me for pricing.
I start hosting this hike around Thanksgiving, when we may not have any snow on the ground but I will share with my guests a secret local place they can play in the snow after a mile hike uphill with great views.
Other things to note
Snowshoeing is harder then hiking, so if you wish to snowshoe remember that it is a bit harder and you go a lot slower.

I'm a self-taught nature guide and outdoor bloggess. I've been hiking in the San Bernardino National Forest for the last twenty years and know every great seasonal hike in our mountains and also have tons of knowledge to share on our local flora and fauna. I hike through the Big Bear area trails nearly every day year round (usually with my pup at my side) and I love to guide others on nature tours and hikes for beginners to advanced hikers. Book a hiker with The Hungry Mountaineer today to have the most fun outdoor experience in the Big Bear area!
I have had a lot of guests asking what the current snow conditions are like on the trails where I take my guests for hikes and snow play.
Check out my Instagram stories

Dónde estarás

In the end of February, this hike is usually hosted on Bristlecone Forest Road but check your Airbnb messaging for updates about where the hike is hosted each week. Depending on what the weather is like and how much snow is on the ground I will take you and your guests to a unique hiking location that usually is only visited by locals.

I booked this experience at the last minute and was not disappointed. Amber was kind enough to give us the option to regular hike or snowshoe hiking. Of course, we took the snowshoe experience. It was great fun and Amber was delight. I would definitely book again. It is always good to have someone who knows the mountains the way she does.

Amber and her pup Carly were super friendly. Amber is very knowledgeable and knows some great places to hike, bike, and walk. Glad we book the experience and got to meet the two of them and some others on the hike.

Amber is an amazing guide and is very knowledgeable about the area! Amber and her pup led us up the hiking trail with a group and it couldn’t have been a better experience. I would highly recommend and definitely will be back to see her!

Amber is a lovely human and a literal MASTER of the Big Bear wilderness! As a Big Bear native, she's an encyclopedia of knowledge, including of local history and everything about the area--a hiking, outdoors and nature aficionado. She's extremely professional, calm, kind, helpful, communicative, flexible, patient, spontaneous, informative, optimistic and a pleasure to hike with. We booked a private hike with wild donkeys (and this has nothing to do with Amber), but as fate would have it, we didn't see a single donkey and my poor 8 YO animal-lover daughter who'd been anticipating it for days, was heartbroken. Based on other reviews, we were also looking forward to a little treat or special drink, hot chocolate, etc. at the end (Amber has a food blog!), but for some reason that didn't happen (perhaps it was a misinterpretation on our end). Even though we were sad to miss the donkeys, I loved the gorgeous, expansive (didn't see another soul), view-saturated hike itself and will definitely hike with Amber again next time and track down those sneaky donkeys, one way or another! LOL. Thank you for offering these beautiful Big Bear journeys, Amber. With no snow, our private hike wth you and the Big Bear Jeep experience were easily the highlights of our trip!

Amber is everything. This exceeded my expectations by far. Though there wasn’t enough snow for shoeing, I was taken on the most magical, serene hike through the SB Forest with my 85 pound snow dog. Make sure your shoes or boots have heavy traction. Can’t wait to hike Again, Amber!
